Should there be an R rated ST film?

not necessary. Some very good movies are R, but I can't think of a reason why they should even make it that graphic.

I voted no, not because I have anything against R Rated films and the great sci-fis that you have mentioned are fine examples (I loved 'Watchmen' too), but I am happy with Star Trek staying for the broadest audience possible. Let other films go down that path, keep Star Trek where it is firmly planted.

You say that now but what if back in the day there had been an R TOS. ¿There would have certainly have been a shot of Shat's bare butt for you to post in your Kirk appreciation thread. ¿Uh oh, overload!!

Okay, you've totally convinced me to change my mind...bring on the R-Rated Trek     ;)

No, I don't think it'd be as successful as you hope.

An example of this kind of thinking it the last action of Kirk in the new movie. First he offers help to Nero, then he opens fire! WTF, that's just dumb. It's the one part of the whole film I really loathe.

The way the studios work these days, an R rated ST movie would be filled with more of this kind of macho crap. I just don't think the majority of the fans would enjoy it.

:eyesroll:

This has been discussed in many threads...Nero was a homicidal maniac who had just murdered 6 Billion Vulcans, and was intent on destroying Earth and Andoria was well, what would you have Kirk do? Slap him on the bloody wrist...get real.

I'm not saying Kirk should've given him a hug, but the way he acted, "Do you want any help? No! Then eat laser death!", just made Kirk look like an arse.

Oh, while I'm typing, bite me!

Sorry Zero, shouldn't have been so tetchy with you, I apologise for being a smartass.

But you know Kirk didn't exactly send love letters to Khan either, you know, Idon't see any difference, is what I am saying

Fair enough.

To me I didn't see that nuKirk had any obligation to offer rescue in the first place. Nero and the Narada were a menace, neither nuKirk nor Kirk in TWOK had any compunction in destroying their opponent. And again with Kruge in TSFS, Kirk offered escape, which was refused and then Kirk kicked the Klingon in the face! That's fairly macho, as well (including the line that got rousing applause, "I have had , enough, of you!" )

And his kick sent Kruge falling off a cliff and into a flowing river of molten lava! ¿Doesn't get more macho than that.

That certainly looks more 'kill-crazed' to me than nuKirk's decision to blast the Narada.

Yeah, cuz if you think about it, he could have just beamed up alone, leaving that nasty Klingon to figure his own way out.

I think that Kirk is not and should not be portrayed as Picard ¿:logical:

And let's face it, in said scene from STXI Spock is more interested in 'blasting' than Kirk is

Uh, MG, I think you better watch that scene again. Kirk was offering Kruge his hand to pull him up, instead Kruge was about to pull Kirk down with him. Kirk HAD to kick him else he would have fallen into the hell of Genesis with Kruge.

What would be accomplished if a ST movie contains more adult material?

Beat me to it.

On the OP an R-rated Trek would likely get mired in how the world is and not pay enough mind to how the world should be. Trek to me is largely about how things should be.

Leave 'the man who turns the other cheek gets bruises on both sides of his face' to the super heroes and leave Trek to remind us that 'an eye for an eye makes the world blind.'

If done right it could ratchet up the tension and suspense levels, rather than resorting to "jiggly cam" to accomplish same.

Imagine if Blade Runner or T2 were watered down to get a PG, then imagine if XI had been watered up to an R. ¿The possibilities are immense.

Couldn't tension and suspense be achieved without a more adult approach? what exactly is more adult? more violence?

Beat to it again.

Tension comes from either not knowing what will happen to the characters or knowing what will happen but being powerless to prevent it. The characters can be put in various forms of jeopardy without resorting to things that garner an r rating.
