I cannot stress this enough...

I WISH TO GOD the current batch of Trek writers would just concentrate on stories that occur between the episodes instead of this "what if" future crap. I mean, I already can't stand the DS9 relaunch, but I had no idea the TNG relaunch was just as bad (if not worse, apparently).

Seriously though, it was much more fun to read TOS stories that happened during the 5-year mission or the film-era, TNG stories that occurred between Seasons 1 and 7, DS9 stories that occured between Seasons 1 and 7, etc.

OtakuJo (God bless her) is actually excited the editors and writers decided to do an entire book on Rugal. Freakin' Rugal?!? Seriously?

Instead, how about a story that involves Sisko and Worf bonding over an experience on Qo'noS to uncover a Dominion spy for Gowron?

- Or a story about O'Brien and Bashir taking a vacation to the "Shore Leave" planet from TOS that goes crazily and comedically wrong?

- Or a story in which Kira, Jadzia, and Quark take a runabout to Ferenginar and get trapped in a subspace phenomenon that sends them back in time to a pre-warp Cardassia Prime?

- Or a story in which Jadzia and Worf travel to Trill so Worf can meet Jadzia's family who happen to have been arrested by the Trill authorities for allegedly smuggling symbiotes to the Orion Syndicate?

- Or a story about Ro Laren arriving on DS9 to tell Sisko about the final days of Cal Hudson and request Sisko's assistance in finding a surviving Maquis murderer who plans to assasinate the Kai?

- Or a story involving a secret mission to liberate Tom Riker from a Dominion prison asteroid whose location is only known by one of Garak's old acquaintances in the Obsidian Order?

Granted, I've only focused on DS9 here, but the untold possibilities are ENDLESS.

I just hate the current direction of the Trek books. And like others have said, they're just way too interconnected these days as well...

While I've found most of the relaunch novels enjoyable, I do have to say I'd buy each and every story you just pitched!  :rookie:

What book is that? I have a book that talks about the Borg attacking and taking over a bunch of planets, I wonder if it's the same.

The Destiny Trilogy.

Its a very good 3 book series. The reason they are doing the books the way they are is to movie the stories and the timeline forward.

This should help.

To bring you up to date (the relaunch books rock BTW! They are much better than anything that is offered from Paramount these days):

2379: NEMESIS
2380:
- In the aftermath of Shinzons coup d'etat, the Romulan empire falls aparts and is devided into two seperate states: The Romulan Empire, and the Imperial Romulan State
- Shortly before NEMESIS the new Federation Administration takes lead under the Nanietta Bacco, following a crysis on the planet Tezwa, which almost resulted in an conflict with the Klingon Empire.
- Later in 2380 Starfleet discovers a huge shut down Borg Cube inside Federation Space. The Cube is eventually reactivated and later stopped by the Enterprise-E, but not destroyed. Some month later Admiral Janeway leads the investigation of the Cube and is assimilated and turned into a new Borg Queen. The Cube itself evolutions and starts to live, almost destroying Earth in the process. After it is destroyed an assimilated ship, the Einstein is able to escape with a new race of Borg, advanced and even more dangerous.
- The Enterprise is able to stop them only to learn that massive Borg forces are starting an assault on Federation Space.
2381:
- It is all out war. Borg ships are laying waste to Federation, Klingon and Romulan Worlds. Billions are dying. It takes the crews of the Enterprise, the Titan, the Aventine and a former long-dead believed captain to stopp the threat once and for all.
The Borg are not wiped out, they are transformed into a new species... Actually they are reintegrated into what they originate from (you should REALLY read STAR TREK: DESTINY books 1 to 3).
- Later that year: The Federation lies in ruins... 40 % of the fleet are destroyed, 60 billion lives lost, hundrets of worlds ruined. The remaining forces concerntrate on the rebuilding process... meanwhile the Tholians, Romulans, Breen and some other species form an alliance to weaken the Federation even further. They call themselves the "Typhon Pact" and form a new state of confederate planets, similar to the UFP.
The UFP itself forms an even stronger alliance with the Klingons, the Imperial Romulan State (under Donatra's rule) and the Cardassians...

I tell you... TREK has never been better... give it a chance... you will not be disappointed.  :)

OtakuJo (God bless her) is actually excited the editors and writers decided to do an entire book on Rugal. Freakin' Rugal?!? Seriously?

Only 'cos I always wondered what happened to him with all the crap that was happening on Cardassia in later episodes and everything. From what I understand in the blurb it's more about the later history / politics of Cardassia anyway. or seems to be.

Just incidentally I do like a lot of the numbered books also. I'll read anything DS9 that I can get my hands on (books, fanfics, ANYTHING.) -- especially if it's got my fave characters in it. Vengeance (5), Warchild (1-2) and Hollow Men (6) are probably among some of my favourite stories so far. ~incidentally the bracketed numbers mean seasons.

I'd love it if they did another numbered book.

No Rugal is not one of my fave characters. Like I said I'm just curious. I still like the relaunch books. As far as I'm concerned (and this holds true for almost any topic) others are welcome to their opinions. I am welcome to mine!!

Gotta find something to be excited about in this life. And take a moment's excitement wherever we can.

I agree fully.  The current "future" of Star Trek in the books reads like badly written fan fiction. :grr:

Crap, crap, utter crap.

"Countdown" was fan fiction...

Maybe you should read the books before you criticise them.

The latest TREK books have been more mature and demanding than the crap of movie JJ Abrams threw at the fans.

I've been enjoying the Titan stories and enjoyed the Destiny Trilogy and I'm still onboard with New Frontier although I haven't made time for the latest novel yet.

While new 'episodes' would be fun, I'm finding TNG era season 22 pleasant enough.

I'm rather scared that all the best writer's are going to 'jump ship' to the JJ verse which I have no interest in.

They will beat it to death now, until nobody will be interested in it.

Just wait a few years, and we will get quality TREK back to big, small screen and other media.

Ummmm the countdown series is not fan fiction, since it was written by the writters of TREK XI.

Storma is right don't be quick to judge the books. They are very well done and in some cases better than some episodes of the series they are based on.

They probably wont jump ship, it does look like they are just filling the need of books for TREK XI fans. In  due time the TREK XI books will get there own writers.
