As somebody who doesn't particularly care for DS9 at all, I have to agree that this episode was a worthwhile venture done with style and respect. The background to it is discussed in the new book Star Trek 365. It showed with conviction just how clever TV special effects had become - you really don't see the join! And anyway, how on earth could you go wrong if there are Tribbles involved?

This episode was made to celebrate the past franchise. In the same year VOY had a similar one putting Tuvok in the middle of Capt. Sulu STVI Excelsior scene when Ruhra Pente explodes.

But that was not nearly as brilliant as Trials and Tribbleations.

Everything done on que, great storyline, the SFX, the lightning, even Worf's comentary on Klingon ridges just Amazing!

that was a good scene as well...blending bashir & O'brien in w the original cast...it's as if they were actually there! lol

Proves one point though.

The fact Kirk didn't notice these guys highlights just how absolutely unremarkable and forgetable O'Brien and Bashier were ...

Personally I think that scene proves something else: How easy it would be to get on a starship! Lol, forget about going to the academy, you can apparently just throw on a uniform, beam aboard, and no one will know any differently!

An other fun part was that they were able to get the original actor for the transformed Klingon, Trek was good for that bringing back originals actors for any story line of any Trek show. It was one of there strong points.
At least I don't remember any substitute actor except for Cockren.
