I can't help but question folks who say that "Star Trek neds to get back to the theme of exploration."
Despite Kirk or Picard's opening monologue, Star Trek was not often (even rarely) about exploration....

I have to agree with you.

When fans express their expectations/objections, those too often sound very controversial.

They may say "we want something new!", while they actually want Kirk and Spock...

They may say "we want exploration, like before!", while their favorite earlier shows were only occasionally about exploration...

P.S.
ENT's first two seasons were mostly about exploration and meeting new species, TCW was really a new theme and the Xindi arc too -- and remember how much rejection it all faced...

Agreed. I was amazed when I went through the plot synopsis for each of the TOS shows to see which of them actually had (or even started out with) the Enterprise on an exploration mission (ie: mapping, surveying a new world, etc.) and they were limited to those few episodes I listed.

To rocketscientist's point, the rest of the time they are in an emergency response role, a diplomatic / millitary role, or in a courrier / "check up on those people" role. So, less than 1/4 of their missions were related to pure exploration an discovery.

But, suddenly everyone feels like Star Trek has "lost sight of what it is all about." Again, it comes down to an inconsistent application of standards.

OK, I read somewhere that the odds that Khan would be in the next movie was 50/50. Can anyone back me up? I may have just imagined it.

You are right.  In fact that exact phrasing was used by Orci/Kurtzman in an interview a few weeks ago.

Dang, I really hoped I had imagined it. I do not want Khan in it.  :bugout:
