this would have been a great way to end Voyager

Let me preface this by saying I love Voyager, and I especially loved the End Game.  I do have some issues with the way it ended, but overall it was great.

I'm sure this has been discussed before, but perhaps not?

As great as Endgame (and season 7 in general) was, I think it would have been awesome if by season 6 or 7 Voyager reached the Gamma quadrant & they had to make their way through Dominion space during the war.  That could have made for some great stories.  we could have seen some of the Dominion species that DS9 never showed.

thoughts?

Why would they have gone to the gamma quadrant?

Voyager had knowledge of the wormhole leading into the Gamma Quadrant: the heart of Dominion Space. The Voyager crew should have at the beginning of the series considered going to the Gamma Quadrant to use the wormhole to get back into Federation space, even if in passing during dialogue. That would have been a good thing, even just to mention it as an option.

At the time of Voyager, the Bajor Wormhole was known of, and as the writing geniuses would have it, wouldnt you know it? Voyager landed in the Delta Quadrant JUST AS FAR AWAY from the exit of the Bajor wormhole in the GQ, as they were from SF HQ in the AQ (think equilateral triangle). Otherwise, if they were closer to that wormhole exit, it would have made a lot more sense to go shooting for that, instead of traversing the unknown DQ...so it was a 50-50 crap shoot by design which path they chose, so the writers chose the path that allowed them to embellish anything they wanted into the series

It should probably be mentioned that going by the numbers, they should be in the Beta Quadrant by the end of the series, yet not only is it not mentioned, but they still consider themselves decades from home.

Those who didn't understand the ending didn't like it, but the ending is great.

oh i agree.  It was IMO the best finale to any of the ST series.  my beef with Endgame is minor minor things.  things like not telling us what happens to Seven & Icheb and how they adapt to life on Earth.  Ditto on the Doctor & Naomi Wildman.  Why did they have to leave Nelix in the DQ.  Ambassador to the DQ?  lame...  Why kill of Chakotay?  Harry Kim as a captain?  That little guy will be an ensign forever :p

Lots of those questions were answered in Homecoming & Far Away Shore by Christie Golden.  I guess some stuff was also explained in the Spirit Walk books also.

When writing Cardinal, one of my writers kept bugging me about doing a Voyager reunion episode.  I kindly said no, but she insisted.  I then kindly said "get the hell out of my office," but over the coming months she still insisted.  During this time, I realized that Voyager was looming over our shoulders.  There was no closure, it was just left hanging.  We were able to cast TNG and DS9 into the past with ease, but Voyager kept nagging at us.  So when, months later, she came to me again, I finally gave in.

I actually hated the episode and rewrote it myself, but that's another story.  When completed, we realized that we had finally left Voyager in the past.  We had shaken off the monkey and passed the torch on to the next generation.  We did what Voyager couldn't; We brought closure to the Voyager characters (and provided a great little publicity stunt for sweeps week ;) ).

So, if you're wondering, it's not that hard to tie the loose ends up.  We did it pretty quickly, easily and still had plenty of time for a good Cardinal-based story.

Can you post that here Slag?

I can't see why not.  I know 1701E would have a fit, but that's only if he notices.

Family Reunion?  I did write the episode.  I only get co-writer credit because I chopped another writer's story up to write it (the first act is basicly her entire episode squeezed into ten minutes).

The writers wouldn't have wanted two shows running at the same time doing kinda the same thing. I was happy that they were in different quadrants.

Yeah I understand your argument with this.  For whatever reason the BnB boys did not like DS9 or the direction that Ira Stephen Behr went and I think that is the reason why Insurrection was made instead of a Dominion War based movie.
I always thought that a tie in episode would have been nice but it just wasn't possible.  I think this is why Star Trek failed under the BnB leadership because there were too many opportunities that they ignored due to self pride, and they screwed the pooche because of that.
