Actually, yellow was used for captains in Enterprise, too, albeit that it was in shoulder stripes on a blue jumpsuit. When Starfleet changed their color schemes from yellow to red for command, that's beyond me. Yellow's been moved to technical people, like engineers, security, sciences, etc... Doctors wear turquoise, I believe now, like Dr. Crusher. Deanna Troi wears a gray jumpsuit with a purple color, usually. So there's quite a bit of a uniform change between the two centuries. A lot more significant from what we've seen in the 22nd century when they were wearing blue jumpsuits with color coded shoulder stripes.

Trois' "jumpsuit" was not part of the uniform. refer to the episode "Chain Of Command"

I so stand corrected... Seemed like Troi was given the same uniform as the rest of medical staff, even tho she was counselor.

In sci-fi or in real life I wonder why uniforms are changed. I mean you can use police officer uniforms for example. They look different in every decade.

Check that link out for a complete list of uniforms except the new movie. Other than that it is very thorough.

Police Uniforms are changed often for many reasons. One of which is due to people posing as police officers. It happened in my city a few years back, and that's when I found out one of the reasons why the uniforms change in design and colour scheme. If someone's in an cop uniform that doesn't look quite right, they're either a criminal or an actor shooting a film.

Yes... Also, you'll see in DS9 and Voyager that the color schemes of the uniforms are inverted from the TNG uniforms, in that you have colored shoulders, and the rest of the uniform is black. Wonder when that happened.

I always presumed that they were more spaceship specific. There doesn't seem to be much of a strict standard. also in the original series why do chekov and sulu and that also wear yellow?
