Me, too...That's a tough one, sometimes. I dealt with it a bit on the Night in Sickbay thread. He does seem to have some contradictory traits--voyeuristic and curious about sex, but reserved about his own body (and Denobulans "don't like to be touched", although they do live on an extremely crowded planet). Glad you're having a look at these threads and joining in, Croatine! One thing only...You have the same avatar as another active ENT forum member, honeybee! And you're both thoughtful and circumspect, and have that in common...

Thank you very much for your kind words, Grigori. Avatar problem solved . Oh yes, you reminded me about this touching problem. Well, now it really has no sense - Denobulans are so uninhibited, so sexually active with almost strange people (new companions) and curious, and they don't like to be touched? It's the writers' fault, and it's a pity, because Phlox would be much more interesting if better thought over.

Phlox is one of my favorite characters for Enterprise and I love how he is played by Billingsley. I found him to be a very wise and calm force for the crew but also a source of wit and eccentricity. I do not prefer the CGI tricks they used for an alien gag but I understand whey they wished to include this.
It is true their culture can seem contradictory but this is not unusual for any culture. There are many real life examples of contradictions in culture. I can think of some explanations for the ones which are mentioned.
Some people have expressed a preference for a human doctor and not a Denobulan. I can see this point and it makes sense. But in another sense I am thankful he was included with the crew and his exotic alien culture and contributions enriched the show.

flox rox. i like him and he is played so well. They seemed to use the character well. Not a break-out star like in Voyager - he is more solid, a foundation for the series. Had good quirks too.

I think Phlox was underused. Aside from Dear Doctor (which is hashed out in the upthread and has its flaws) - Phlox episodes and scenes are always standout. I really enjoyed the part he played in Similitude, thought Doctor's Orders was great, also enjoyed The Breach and wished we had seen more of his family, besides the one wife. Denobulans were quite interesting - and never let it be said that Enterprise didn't create a good alien race, because they did. I just wish we had seen more of them.

I'm surprised he didn't like the movie. After all, two civilizations were wiped out in it. Sounds like a great comedy for him.

Oh, Slagonia, are you trying to say you didn't like "Dear Doctor"? But I actually have a serious question to pose to you. What if that episode did not exist? Would you be able to like Phlox? It's just an academic question. Because I don't care for Dear Doctor - I thought the writing - which was heavily interfered with by the network - did fail in that episode. But I like all the other Phlox episodes and think JohnB is a really good, charismatic actor.

I wouldn't hate him, but he was still an obnoxious jerk.
