I've always wondered how they would be ranked if let's say Forbes did a report on the richest Ferengi. Of course the Grand Nagus would be #1, but how would they follow according to what we know from the show?
Is Quark really that wealthy or is he poor as dirt?

He's not poor, but not rich either. He employed numerous other ferengi afterall, so had to make enough latinum to pay them... but not so much that he could save and save and after 4 years buy that shiny Ferengi *cough*caddilac*/cough* starship, much like the one his Cousin Gaila bought, gave him (and booby-trapped with Cemocite (sp?))

Quark is a small business owner, who is constantly under the influence of every shift in fortune. He wouldn't make any "Richest Ferengi" list but he is reasonably well off compared to -- say -- his waiters, or Rom. I'm not even that sure that Gaila would make a richest Ferengi list either, even when he had that moon of his.
Zek certainly would make the list -- yep. And possibly Nilva? But I'm not sure that any of the other characters we see even come close.

All those Ferengi in the first season ep "The Nagus" would have to be filthy rich, otherwise Zek would not have called them to the meeting.
Also most of the high ranking members of the Ferengi Commerce Authority would be on the list, Nilva was in this group
Nilva's Bio...Chairman of Slug-o-Cola, a powerful voice within the Ferengi Commerce Authority. In order to secure support for Zek when Brunt attempted to usurp the role of Grand Nagus in 2374, Quark became a female to beguile the oomox-starved Nilva.

What about Brunt? Is he more wealthy than Quark?

Brunt is most likely quite a bit more wealthy than Quark ~at least when he is in favour with the FCA and gov't and all. After all he was able to afford to buy Quark's remains when Quark was misdiagnosed with Dorek syndrome. And he would not have had a chance to plot against Zek if he didn't have some money to his name. But he is not among the super-wealthiest Ferengi, I don't think.

I'm curious; how does a Nagus acquire wealth - is it something that is gained gradually (presumably they have some sort of salary), or do they 'inherit' some sort of statutory wealth from the previous incumbent along with the title?
For example, does Rom automatically gain wealth as soon as the title becomes his, or does he have to "earn" it gradually during his time as Nagus?

Given that whoever is nagus is automatically rich, and Rom isn't exactly the wealthiest around -- I would guess that there is some degree of automatic profit that comes with the job.
After all, could Ferengi accept the idea of a nagus who just wasn't wealthy yet?
But with so many people offering bribes and sucking up to the nagus, that does not make the opportunities for earning further profit any less limitless.

The Nagus gets a percentage of every major business transaction in the entire alliance. That would buy a lotta beer ahem Romulan Ale. This does not include bribes and sucking up.

But wouldn't a Nagus prefer to drink slug juice, black holes, or Ferengi stardusters.
None of this foreign stuff.
