After lurking on this forum since the new movie came out, I've noticed one thing that seemed to be a lone point of agreement between those who both liked and disliked STXI - everyone seems to dislike the new Engineering Section.
Perhaps I had simply consumed too much of the liquid that the new Engineering Section's set normally produces, but I actually liked how they did it - I thought that it brought a suitably heavy duty, asymmetrical industrial feel to the area in contrast to the very stark, uncluttered and clean aesthetics of the corridors and other sections of the ship. I felt it gave the impression that it really was the innards of a vast series of machines and was perhaps a more realistic portrayal of a sprawling Engineering Section than the sometimes too clean and neat versions seen before.
However, in my brief previous travels around this board, I haven't really seen a lot of people express this view, while conversely many seem to dislike the new Engineering. Is there anyone else out there who actually likes the new Engineering Section... or is it just me? What do you like/dislike about it?

Well I don't have a problem with them using a brewary to film it in. They just didn't bother to dress the set enough to make it appear somewhat enclosed like they are on a starship. I felt like I was on Delta Vega where Scotty was on a planet. I think they just did not budget a good engineering set.
This can be fixed in Trek 12 by them explaining that the Enterprise's engineering section was operational but not quite finished for it's launch. After all the ship was brought out in a crisis. We cannot honestly believe it was 100 percent complete.

Yea... I liked the industrial look, and the more realistic approach of making the engine room look like something that actually functioned in the bowels of a ship... but I would have been a lot happier if they showed us a dilithium chamber of some kind, or the impulse engines, or the intermix chamber... really ANYTHING that made it look like an ENGINE room. As it was, you wouldn't have known whether this was the workings of the engines, the waste reclamation, or the food sythesis thingamajigs.

Yeah Scotty could have been swimming in toilet water. LOL. It would have been nice to see a toilet for the first time in Star Trek. Maybe with security barging in on McCoy in the shuttle. LOL!

I hated it compared to the old versions of engineering.
Did it bother me to the point where it interfered with my ability to enjoy the movie? Nope. Awesome flick. If the design of engineering is one of my only gripes...we're doing pretty good.

My suspicion is that like most sequels, we'll get to see a lot more of the environment (in this case, the Big E) in the sequel. ¿Hopefully they'll use this opportunity to flesh everything out a bit, tone down the lights on the bridge, and give us some more starship porn.... we didn't get to see nearly enough of the old girl IMO.

I didn't mind it. What I DID mind is Scotty NOT going to the matter/antimatter pods and draining off a nice lager...

It was one of few the things that took me out of the movie. It was so obviously a poorly dressed brewery that it did annoy me. It was used twice as well, once heavily (but poorly) dressed when Kirk goes to find Uhura, and then not dressed at all when Kirk and Scotty show up. And where has everyone gone? After Scotty and Kirk return to the ship, it seems that just about everyone else has left???

The engineering of the USS Enterprise in STXI was a big failure in my book. It looked totally out of place and certainly not the engineering section of a starship capable of warp flight.
Not even in todays ships there are not that many pipes in the engineering. Most of the machinery is hidden from view.

It didn't looked liked anything we saw before. Which I found a bit silly. It looked more like the engine room of a old steam ship then a warp ship.
It even made it more silly when it seemed it was mainly used for that silly "scotty ends up in a pipe scene".

I was wondering that too. You would think some alarms would go of and some engineers would show up.
