Ok so im a little confused about how starfleet handles its Enlisted people.

His uniform is the same as an officers however somehow people are able to tell that he is a Chief Petty Officer. ?

Enlisted people can only go so far in the military. ?So why is Obrien given commands on DS9 and is chief engineer? ?These position are usually meant for officers. ?And usually any officer outranks any enlisted man. ?

and why is Obrien like the only one in starfleet who is enlisted?

He mentioned in 'The Wounded', I think, that he served as tactical on another ship, and I htnk he served on another one, too. He's not enlisted, I'm pretty sure.

I'm dead sure your wrong.

Yes he served at the position of tactical, durring the first Cardaian wars.

And yes he's an inlisted man.

Well, transporter is a small section, and most enlisted people probably go there, so O'Brien might be a higher rank than them.

Regardless he's an enlisted man.

He even said as much once.

He's not a commissioned officer.

I know he's commissioned. What episode is it in,though, that he says it? I only have 4 seasons of TNG.

Early on in TNG he was an officer, but this was changed at a later point in the series and he remained an enlisted man for 7 seasons of DS9. Since he spent way more time as an enlisted man, his character is regarded as one

It was never said that he was a commissioned officer.

No need to be sorry.

He was called a "Chief Petty officer" in TNG episode "family"...and Chief Petty officers arent commissioned officers.

He mentioned enlisting in DS9 episode "Shadowplay" if I'm right.

And there were a number of comments he made durring his time at DS9 about not wanting to be an officer.

stuff like "thats why I stayed an enlisted man" or words to that effect.

Thank you. I have barely seen any of DS9 (2 episodes) so I'm not that familiar with remarks he made there.

Your welcome.

If you want my opinion DS9 is the best written of any Trek.

It had the best character depth and the best character development.

But they don't explore much; I think that's the only reason I couldn't get into it very much, even though everything else about it is great. On the topic of other treks, what's your opinion of Enterprise and Voyager? My dad said Ent was vulgar, and that Voyager is in some ways better than TNG and TOS.

How is Enterprise vulgar? I thought it was too tame (especially Capt. Archer he's so hokey), DS9 was definitely the most 'adult' of the Trek series, in my opinion.
