I kind of thought Jake was kind of a weeny.  He could have been a stronger character, I liked his character when he was younger and all of the tricks that he played on people when he was hanging around with Nog, but he got old and kind of girly.

Yeah you know.  I mean Sisko was this incredible force, and Jake was more like a pest.  He could have been better, but maybe it was because he acted more like a reporter when he should have been more angry with the Dominion.  What do you think OtakuJo?  And are you really Nicole DeBoer?....lol

To identify as something is a matter of pride. And you almost make it sound as if we have to care about five-minute trends!

Besides, need I point out that my post was over half an hour before your post, so that means that up to eight five-minute trends could well have come and gone in the interim.

:p

Pride in things you got by birthright is of course rather mehh.. I can see if it's some thing you accomplished.

God, I can remember some guy calling me deranged for taking no pride in my gender. He called it sick that I said 'I can't help but notice that I did nothing to achieve it?'

Five minute trend is an excellent rhetoric.

Well I don't think it's weird or anything not to have pride in your identity but the reverse must needs be every bit as valid.

You just said that identity was pride? How can one then not have pride in identity? If one has an identity that already means the pride?

I don't get this 'identify' business.

People who have a strong identity also have strong pride, I think the argument being made here is that Jake does not have an identity so he can't have any pride like his father does.  But I believe his identity was strong, Jake knew who he was and what he was going to become, I think his character just got lost, and maybe Behr and the writers didn't really have a place for a character like that in the Dominion War.  I actually think it would have been better if Dukat and the Dominion were in control of DS9 longer than they were then Jake's character would have been better developed.  What do you guys think?

I sort of get what you are saying. There is definitely something "watered down" about Jake's character. No argument there -- even if Ben Sisko never really made it to my "stand-out character" list either.

(I'm just a little reticent about using gender-associated words as insults. It kind of hearkens back to when women were supposed to be the "weaker sex" and so-called feminine traits seen as undesirable.)

ps. Just because I have the same hair style as Ezri that doesn't make me Nicole DeBoer. Entirely the wrong hemisphere on both counts N/S, E/W, besides.

I still think that one of the best things that the PTB did was to turn Jake into a writer rather than someone who was going to join Starfleet like his father. And Nog into the starfleet guy. They both became so much more their own characters at that point.
