Good job Yanks. I agree with your review. I love the TOS 1701. I can respect the new 1701, but I am waiting for a refit to fix the nacelles. I like the warp effect, and I can like with the bridge (just lower the lights a little). Now for a movie size shot of the bridge at warp :)

Great review. It reads a lot like the one I posted back on May 8. I said the same thing, that the "story" was actually pretty standard and served more to move the character introductions and circumstances forward. I actually liked this aspect. I have a feeling that the story for the sequel will be alot better since they have gotten all of the introductions out of the way.

I also was unimpressed with the score when I first saw it, but it has SERIOUSLY grown on me. I couldn't get the music out of my head all week, and I went and bought it and now I really like it. Give it some time and you may appreciate it.

I also noticed some of the TOS sound FX like you did. Great stuff...!

Are you planning on going again?

good review. I agree with most of it. My score was .5 lower than yours because I thought the timing of some of the humor was way off.

Hmmmmm..... ¿just noticed something. ¿

If the view out of the front view screen of the bridge is actually from the bridge rather than being transmitted from a forward facing camera of some sorts..... where is the front half of the saucer?

In views where you are looking "down" from a higher vantage point...you actually CAN see the front of the saucer.

Check it:

www.trekmovie.com

Go to "panoramas" and look at the bottom right picture. Cool stuff.

I actually really liked the idea of the viewscreen as more of a "heads up display" than just a big screen television. I thought it was cool when they were talking to Nero, for example, and you can still see the Narada out in the background.

Yanks, if you care about all things decent, you won't post that horrific version of a Bridge again,
it gives me a headache .
By the way I give the movie a..4

Why do so many people hate the nacelles? The new Enterprise is the muscle car of Enterprises. That baby's built for power and speed. Somehow it reminds me of the '08 Dodge Charger:

I just got back from seeing the movie. Great review Yanks. I totally agree!
There was a lot more for original Trek fans than I anticipated and Leonard Nimoy had a bigger part than I thought he would. I really enjoyed this movie and look forward to a sequel. :D

I agree. The nacelles have always been my favorite part of this new design.

This picture you posted was in the movie and when that shot came it really looked so much better on the big screen and it really took my breath away.

Thanks!! Glad you enjoyed it!!!

I'm optimistic for future Trek.

How about this, the last movie takes us into the future somewhere and we get a TV series with these actors and actresses!!!!

That would work for me, especially if the crew was as charasmatic and had the chemistry of this crew!

Great review Yanks!!! Must have been really fun to get to see it with your boys as well.

I am not sure of the bridge. I have seen the movie twice now... honestly.. the "IPOD Bridge" is growing on me.

Also, you surprised me... I thought you of all people would like the new engine room... for once, it looks like an engine room. With pumps and coolant and reactors and electrical lines. Looks more like a ship to me. The classic one was good though as well I just thought the engine room in this movie was a lot more realistic.

I am really optimistic for Trek as well. I think we will definitely get a TV series now. Probably not with these actors and actresses though. CBS will want their own. However, it is possible that Moonves won't do it since he hates science fiction so much.

Question, what are your thoughts on the warp speed and the time it takes to get to Vulcan? Looks like they are monkeying around with the warp speed capabilities of the Big E. It's max speed in the movie is Warp 4. Also, the warp travel speeds and distances are much different than anything on TOS or TNG.

All in all, this was a really FUN movie I thought.

:D

In lieu of a review I will just use yours as my template.

Quote
Kirk: A little too much getting the crap kicked out of him, but maybe that was needed. He was fighting Romulans and Spock (aside from being out numbered in the bar) and they are supposed to have superior strength, so the fact that they did is another nice "nod". Pine was a great choice. Someone I think folks will tune in to see again and again. I enjoyed his humor and REALLY enjoyed his developing relationship with our new Spock as the movie progressed.

Spock: Wow again! Quintos hit the mark. Could they have cast someone better?? really?... I don't think so. Interesting twist with Spock being assigned by Pike to command the Enterprise before Kirk. I thought the interaction between old Spock and new Spock was very interesting. It was almost like old Spock was telling new Spock it was OK to experience emotions too. (something I feel certain came from Nemoy, he has always spoke of the inner battles that Spock had to deal with, I think we will "see" more now) I think it is very interesting that Spock now has a positive relationship with Sarak, much different from the original, especially with the loss of his mother.

Bones: Probably the best casting of the lot. WOW!!, I actually thought that was Bones from the start. Country Doctor? ... you bet! Is that voice his acting? PERFECT!! Loved how they developed the relationship between him and Kirk from the start. Pretty unique way to get Kirk on the Enterprise too. He also took odds with Spock (green blooded hob-goblin) I thought it was important to keep that relationship. Glad to see they thought the same. Standing ovation from Yanks here.

I am in complete agreement on all three. Plain and simple they wowed me.

Chekov: Most refreshing. Loved the accent and thought it was also important to give this character more than just "driving" expertise. He needed to contribute more than the fact that he was Russian. He actually has talent now and is still very very young. Very nicely done.

Here is my only complaint with the casting. He did a fine job, but I just felt that he "wasn't Chekov". I really can not put my finger on why I feel this way, perhaps it was something as superficial as the fact he has curly hair. Nonetheless, the script writing for the character was excellent.

Quote
Old Spock: Maybe it's his age, but I thought his lines were very ... I don't know, is "forced" the right word? It was like he was trying to prove to all of us that he still could say big words. I don't know, he lost his personal touch it seemed to me. It was nice to know he is alive and well and we may get to see him again. This was no little cameo part though, that was nice. His greatest contribution to this movie was his guidance in the creation of our new Spock I think. I think we will get much more "inter-turmoil" stuff now.

I feel that what you are saying about his delivery has more to do with his age than anything else. The only complaint I had is with his dentist, his dentures are far too noticeably dentures.

Quote
Nero: The only casting and performance that was not good. Not impressed, the story was weak. 25 years in wait? ...but we wont see him again, so nothing lost really.

Yeah, just chalk it up to the sacrifices made that ended up on the editing room floor. One thing I loved was Nero's understatement, when he was on the viewscreen. He just said "hello", like he picked up a phone. Not that I felt that he was a bad choice to cast in the role I feel that a perfect fit for the role would have been Michael C. Hall who is not only a tremendous actor but has (to me at least) the look of a Romulan.

Our new 1701: To start, it's apparent to me that 1701 will not be portrayed as a beloved character as it was before. They didn't "present" it like I thought they might. 1701 was as much a character to me as Kirk and Spock were in TOS, so I was a little let down here. The exterior look was fine I thought. I know he'll get a kick out of this, but I'll side with trekbuff here as say I'm not a fan of the bridge. It is too bright and the lights were too strong I think. The shape of the Captains chair was a nice nod to good ole 1701 though. Where I was most disappointed was Engineering. WTF - really. It looks like a frakin building. Maybe it will take better shape as we get a few more movies, but I'm not a fan of Scotties baby looking like the inside of a paper-mill. I'm also not a huge fan of multiple "guns" and launching points of what looks like "flares". Trek Starships have always been unique in the sci-fi realm with regard to their offensive weapons. This is a change I'm not fond of. I suppose it will have to grow on me although all my sons thought it was great. Maybe just another way to bring in a "new generation".

I also was not fond of the look of engineering, I would have preferred it to be a bit more like the original, but perhaps a little more spacious. As far as the rest of the ship, I loved it. The multiple firing points was a feature that I always felt was needed, as it just seems to be a far more logical design. I do wish that we had been able to see some more of the interior of the ship like crew quarters for example but I suppose that is just the fanboy in me.

Quote
The biggest plus for this movie was, not to sound corny here but, it's "fun" again.

This move was most obviously crafted to bring us old trekkies along for the ride, and this Star Trek fan is most appreciative.

Couldn't have said it any better myself. My final rating - 9 out of 10.

Thanks. I really hadn't taken notice to distances/time/speed here.

I'm sure someone here will bring it out and convert/compare

The new process of "popping" into warp is pretty neat though.

Please correct me if I'm wrong, does the 1701 going to warp (popping) in the movie remind anyone of the Battlestar Galatica going to light speed in the new BSG series?
