Interesting ideas, but the Trek 2009 universe is not a separate universe, it's an altered prime reality, in terms of the story logic.

Thats not entirely correct.

According to the theroy the story is based on it is indeed a different universe.....that was created when Nero entered the past.

This is the beauty of Trek "0"; removing all built up "continuity" since the original show had none.. not to mention the Kligons new look in the (slow) motion picture has no explanation.

The only aspect I like about Trek "0" is wiping the slate clean which, as most people have been observing; giving writers a chance to explore strange NEW worlds. Explore NEW civilizations ...

SInce this newest film has open up a new time line. I think it would be a good idea to have the next film a story about the Laurentian system. The Enterprise can still end up there by starfleet orders. in the film it sound like something big happening there. that my opion though.

what I want to know is how does this timeline effect the astalished "prime" reality what about all those episdes from "the Cage" onwards and the crew of the Enterprise-D/E,  prehaps in a future film we could have the Enterprse-E travel back in time to meet the original crew...?

Starting a fresh is the best thing that could happen to Trek, if it's done right.
The Klingons "appearance" in TMP was explained in detail during Enterprise, and touched on in DS9.

If you can read this it means I've got something to work on here.

the origianl star trek uses alternate realities or time displacement in3 episodes with alternate universes parralel in two other episodes.  the Guardian,  accidental discovery of the time warp from the repulsion from a black star, assignment earth where the enterprise is sent back in time to study earth in its critical scientific destruction history vs social and political advancments.  The alternate paralel universe mirror mirror shows the evil sectioned universe and swap from transporter malfunction the other is the alternative factor where the unvierse blinks out repetively.  gravity goes to zero everywhere, etc Lazaras sent to the bridge of the two sections where the other runs to destroy everything locked the two to all eternity fighting each other, the enterprise here is considered expendable.  the section remake with avery brooks takes the guardian routines these and the trouble with tribbles in effects and computer enhacements to have commander cisco serve in the original enterprise under captin kirk computerized and matered undercover to twart the klingon empire again the destray sherman's planet organian peace treatise and grain

With the success of the movie and its reboot of the timeline (Enterprise being the exemption), it would seem probable that CBS would want to capitalize on that success. If so and a new series is envisioned, I hope they don't just rehash the old races but truly bring in new races. The problem is the cost. Having new races and technology takes a lot of money to successfully do each week. I don't think there is an answer for that problem. That is what always happens to sic fi shows, they become expensive, budgets get cut and the quality collapses and then the ratings go, and then the show gets canceled.

Actually, I hope CBS would do a deal sigh syfy so that the show has a chance of surviving.

You can bet that J.J. Abrams will be creating a Lt. Kahn and Cadet Kor of Starfleet!

Yes, and there may not be a lot known characters introduced, but a lot of unknown.

Alternate reality as canon? Doesn't it sound weird to you? Alternate is alternate, not canon, for god's sake. It's OK to have a short look in alternate reality in one or two series episodes from time to time, but not make it canon, that's complete nonsense

I think having the new timeline in ST:2009 was a brilliant idea. People bellow about the old red alert sounds, and the old 'norms'. Star Trek was CHANGING what norms were as far as science fiction stories were. They explored parallel universes, and alternate timelines... why shouldn't ANOTHER generation keep exploring them. It would be too easy to make all the thngs the same... and then it would become passe very quickly.

Who says they couldn't also do something else to change the new timeline again and undo what Nero did.... Wasn't there an episode where some Temporal Police were monitoring and correcting changes in history...?
