well Romulus and Remus are the starfleet names. Romulus and Remus are the two Romulan homeworlds. Although both planets orbit their central star, Romulus and Remus are often referred to as twin planets.

Romulus and Remus were also twins (the mythilogial founders of Rome)

I guess because they're both considered twins that's why they chose the names

Tell her she's found the source of her first Star Trek novel.

It's already been explained in a novel, actually. I don't remember the title.

But when Romulus was discovered to have a twin planet (this was before BOT), the crew that discovered the second planet named it Remus as a joke because of Romulus and Remus, the twins.

The name stuck.

According to Diane Duane's Rihannsu books the planet names are ch'Rihan (of the Declared) and ch'Havran (of the Travelers). *shrug*

EDIT: Just wanted to make one thing clear...there is no canon reason why the planets were named this way. I've never seen anything that explains where (within the universe) Romulus got its name from.

In Earth history, the ancient Romans were tame kittens when compared with the Mongols of the 13th century. Star Trek II took the name Khan from the Mongols, who conquered most of Asia and Eastern Europe.

I don't know how the romans would do against the Mongols, they didn't really fight cavalry, BUT they couldn't beat the Huns and Attila who were a lot like the Mongols.

The Romans knew how to fight cavalry (ex. Parthia). The command "Repellere equites" was given....forming a Roman Square.

Wow, you waited a whole ten minutes.

Anyway, the answer is that these are human names for the planets.  The Romulans call themselves Rihensuu, we call them Romulans.  I'm sure the Vulcans don't call themselves Vulcans either, we just hear it translated.

The most obvious, even modern day countries are named like this. China ain't china its zhong guo, germany is deutschland, japan is nippon. People rename it until it no longer sounds foreign, simply human nature. It's also worth noting that they along with the Cardassians use roman ranks of centurion legate and tribune.

It's just you.

Remus was first mentioned in the same episode of TOS that Romulos was first mentioned.

"Balance of Terror".
On the chart that Spock displays, however, Romulus' sister planet is shown as "Romii." Always wondered if that was actually "ROMII" as in "Romulus II."

Interesting thought. Would be nice to get the input from a writer or producer on the episode since this makes sense.
