Why were Romulus and Remus named after the mythological founders of Rome? Anybody? My daughter asked me a question I couldn't answer.

Just tell her that while searching for thier new home the Romulans found Earth and met the ancient romans. They were so inspired by thier legends that they decided to adopt the culture into thier own, wiht the exception that they changed the name slightly from Roman to Romulan.
It may not be a canon based answer, but it should be good enough for your daughter, at least for the time being.

Tell her that in the Romulan (Vulcan) language they are (most likely) named something else, and that the English translation for them (or for a lack of one), they loosely translate as Romulus and Remus as they would find that as a best match in examining human historical records to translate into English

Wow, you waited a whole ten minutes. Anyway, the answer is that these are human names for the planets. The Romulans call themselves Rihensuu, we call them Romulans. I'm sure the Vulcans don't call themselves Vulcans either, we just hear it translated.

It's just you. Remus was first mentioned in the same episode of TOS that Romulos was first mentioned. "Balance of Terror".

Are you looking for a "in story" reason or a "real world" reason?

I was discusing it without someone else in another forum and if you read back you will see they were asking me how I was going and I relpyed, 'still waiting'. I wasn't meaning to sound or appear impatient. I found my own answer though and here it is. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Romulan

Romulans were modeled after the Roman Empire. Back in '66, they wanted an alien race that seemed like the natural extension of Rome, like what we would be if the Roman Empire had survived to the 23rd century...Hence, the planets are named Romulus and Remus.

After reading your reference, I feel ashamed of being human that now I know more of Romulan "history" than our own planet's Roman history

In Earth history, the ancient Romans were tame kittens when compared with the Mongols of the 13th century. Star Trek II took the name Khan from the Mongols, who conquered most of Asia and Eastern Europe.
