Season: Five
Air Date: 16.12.1998
Episode: One Hundred and Four
Synopsis: Janeway falls for a man who may be using her.
Rating: 4.4

My View: Surprisingly good episode...

This episode is a big character episode for 'Janeway'. It displayed a new and warming side to her character. In my opinion this was a very risky episode for the series, because it could easily have veered off into oblivion, and to be blunt, it might have become boring. The casting choice of Mark Harelik as Kashyk was good. Both he and Mulgrew seemed to have a good chemistry between them. This made the whole episode such a joy to watch. I'm glad they did this episode, and it certainly proves how much confidence the writers and everyone involved within the series had during this season. I have also learnt that Mulgrey herself had stated that this was her favourite episode of the whole series. Well, I'm just not surprised, because she looked like she was enjoying herself on screen as well.

What are your views on "Counterpoint".

This is an awesome episode.

Janeway should be a card shark because she's got sure a great poker face.  She played Kayshk like a harp from hell.

"Counterpoint" was a clever metaphor for how the episode played out.

"PRAX!!!!"

I loved this episode, I thought it was well played through out, the only error I had was in next to last scene, when Janeway is called in to her ready room, Tuvok is at his station on the bridge, so, when the Devore take over the bridge, they would have had an actual telepath to arrest, this is just a small detail I see as small error.

The best scene was in the mess hall with Janeway and Kayshk, that was a super interplay

JANEWAY: This'll take a minute.
KASHYK: I'm going to miss this coffee of yours.
JANEWAY: Well I will give you the recipe.
KASHYK: Thank you.
JANEWAY: You don't sound too happy about leaving.
KASHYK: The Brenari aren't about to embrace a former Inspector. I'll be feared, hated for what I represent.
JANEWAY: Anxiety doesn't become you, Inspector. Try to relax a little.
KASHYK: I suppose you liked me better in uniform.
JANEWAY: I haven't decided whether I like you at all.

Tuvok & Vorik would have been caught anyway.

Remember, Kashyk already knew she was hiding them in the transporter and they would have been discovered anyway when he went back and told Prax. ¿Remember how they only found barrels of veggies at the end where they thought the telepaths still were?

He was more interested in finding the wormhole at that point so no more telepaths could escape. ¿Bring in Tuvok & Vorik wouldn't have stopped them from looking like fools.

However, I am surprised at how many seem to misunderstand the title and believe that Janeway was in love with Kashyyk.

^^ perhaps, but the Devore were so anal about telepaths, maybe bringing a couple in after being told there were none on the ship would have saved some face??

Well, all the frustrated C/J shippers, they just wanted Janeway to finally get some

You would think, right?

I guess Kashyyk figured he got so well played, taking Tuvok would only cause more trouble from Janeway. ¿She already proved she was smarter than they were. ;)  That's why I enjoyed "Endgame" too.  Janeway pulled the save type of stunt on the Borg Queen.

Janeway was no doubt a cunning Captain.

I was confused by the amount of telepaths that were on board.
I forget what number it is but it didn't seem to add up to me.

We've seen all the other ones Janeway named and except Tuvok & Vorik the others died just the way she said they did.

The only one omitted was Kes

I don't see how anyone can remain a staunch critic of Voyager after watching this episode.  "Counterpoint" is a great episode, one of the very best in the entire Star Trek franchise.  The writing, the writing, THE WRITING!!!  The acting, the acting, THE ACTING!!!  It just doesn't get any better than this.  Every time I watch it, I'm spellbound.  This episode shows Janeway to be the great captain that she is.  Like in "The Thaw," here she's able to outsmart a villain with her wit and intelligence rather than the use of violence.  And the ending contains three genuine plot twists that were just a joy to watch the first time I saw it.

This was a great VOY episodes, one of my favorites. I loved the chemistry between Janeway and Kashyk, especially the 'open ending.' Some fans don't consider it an 'open ending,' but I like to believe perhaps Kashyk allowed Janeway to 'fool' him because he had special feelings for her and wanted her to get away. Just my thoughts on the subject. Awesome episode.
