I'm nitpicking?!?! If you read my post, I clearly stated that I normally don't point these things out because these little "mistakes" happen everywhere in Star Trek. The ONLY reason I brought it up is that the WHOLE PREMISE of these two stories is that NOTHING can leave the holodeck!! It can't be transported off because it has no matter, only energy and the transporter transports matter by CONVERTING it to energy and BACK to matter. Sure it can be replicated, but it WASN'T. It went from Moriarty's hands to Data's, OUT the holodeck entrance and straight to Picard. |
As quantum mentions, its quite funny they took the piece of paper out of the holodeck when the whole premise of the episode is how holograms can't leave the holodeck lol! |
And that's the ONLY reason why I posted it. A simple writing mistake and a flaw in the storyline. Nothing more, nothing less. And now it's all about replicators and transporters and Riker and the EMH and the mobile emitter and water and a snowball......wow. Trekkies, I love ya, but like Deanna said to Data: "Sometimes a cake, is just a cake".

I agree, and good quote. I think one reason people are quick to respond to this 'error' is because its been emphasized before, and sometimes people use it to discredit Trek. However, its definitely a good example of a simple yet glaring inconsistency. At any rate, please excuse our over-analyzing, as it tends to happen when watching Trek. There were definitely a few mistakes in TNG seasons 1+2 as they figured things out in the beginning. And for the record, I consider myself a mere 'Star Trek fan' not a Trekkie.

Puuuhhhlease.....all I did was point out a little mistake and all you've done is try to school me in the art of treknology. And after prolonging this thread with your endless justifications on why this piece of paper could exist outside the holodeck, claim that it took all the joy out of Star Trek for me. And as for that chip on my shoulder, it wasn't there until you got on your techno-babbling pedestal. You and I are on two different wave lengths.
I'm done with this. I'm sorry I ever started this thread.

TO a certain extent the Holodeck technology has to be able to read the intent of the user. It would have to be able to in order to be as interactive as we have seen.
So the Holodeck computers just read data's intent to take the paper with him outside the holodeck and made it real through replication before he left

| Quote (quantumstring12 @ Dec. 25 2008, 12:41 pm) | Ususally I don't point out mistakes on TNG but since the whole premise behind this episode and it's second part "Ship in a Bottle" is that nothing can leave the holodeck, I thought it interesting.
As Professor Moriarty learns more about where he is, he draws Data and Geordi a picture of the Enterprise and shows it to them so they know that he is aware of his exsistence and his whereabouts. But then, Data leaves the holodeck WITH the drawing and shows it to Geordi and the Captain.
Oooops!!!! |
one problem...they didnt actually leave the holodech remember? they were always on the holodeck....just picard & data. everyone/thing else was holo-deck. out on the REAL 'prise, riker was in control & the real geordi managed to make a mini holodeck plug-in & get moriarty & co into that so in the end picard & data could walk out onto the real enterprise.

I think it's because Data had it in his hand when he left, so it stayed...ALso, in another one, the guys from the holodeck walk out and slowly disappear, odd.

You're thinking of the follow-up episode Ship in a Bottle.

Just incase this hasn't been mentioned, it says in the technical manual that the replicators cannot replicate animal life, giving the example that no klingon will eat replicated gagh, because they will only eat living gagh and the replicated stuff is dead. Also replication tech is not as accurate as the transporters but is otherwise identical.
