My other qualm are with non-canon characters...half of the time they are too good to be true and so improbable. I can understand ones where they were shocased in the books, like the Xenexians in New Frontier series. But please don't go making your own character species....it's just so wrong....

*sulks*

well then of course it depends...like your's acutally makes sense, Sel isn't over powered or anything. She's basically the doctor transplanted into the ST universe and in a woman's body. Some others though just make no sense...

Thank you :D And I agree with that. I've seen some characters that have been........godmoded, for lack of a better term.

As to Sel, she WAS a Time Lord, when I first created her, back before I began the RPGs. She's been modified, obviously ¿:p

I quite agree with you on this. Further, as a site administrator - I tend to disallow the use of any telepathic species with the exception of Vulcans as PC's. I find that such powers are grossly abused.

agreed. I do tend to play betazoid not for the sheer enjoyment of reading others minds but, the ide of playing the type of person I want to be. the peace-loving vegetarian, who is at peace with himself and nature. I think to play a telepath you have to be the right type of person, with the right type of skills. It's best that a new person doesn't go gung-ho and create a betazoid and think that they can correctly play them. Most times they end up in the wrong roles, and abuse their powers.

Hello.

I see that the Message Boards have picked up again. Yay.  :D

ANYWAY ~ i don't much agree with this. Sure, most simms are on Federation Starships. And a lot of them are the 'abosolutely perfect, top-of-the-line' USS Indestructible' under 'Captain Jimmy' with warp 47 cabability, etc.

But look a the Intrepid! The backstory is, she's a cadet training cruiser in 2286 that used to be pride of the fleet, but is now a tin-can assignment for wash-outs, idiots and people who have got in trouble with the brass! With a egocentric Romulan captain and a complete mismatch crew!

The VARIETY you can have onboard any Starfleet ship is huge! For me, the ship is just a kind of base-layer for the rest of the cake. Okay?

As for the species thing? Play an Urangagtang for all i care.

The RPG I play with have pretty strict rules about the ships, canon, characters and the like.  When I had a character on a Defiant class ship, it had all the specs of the Defiant class.  Nothing added except a bit bigger sickbay, but it was still played like a Defiant class ship with 4 decks and the right number of crew.  I've had characters that have been on Defiant class, Excelsior class - refit and Norway class.  I've got a human character and I do have a crossbred character that I worked with TPTB and created an Andorian/Deltan halfbreed.  Back story for her is that her parents pretty much turned their backs on the respective races and, with medical help, had an only child.
TPTB also have quite a Specie Database as well as a Technical Specs page.
Quote from the SpeicesDatabase:

There are now a total of 287 aliens, not all of which are available to use as player characters, but there are many entries for you to refer to.

Currently there are 75 alien species from which you can choose to create a character.

Although I do agree that adding decks, tech or wierd things to a ship just because you can isn't good playing.  It's neat to work within limits and guidelines....As for going after Borg, I think one ship did that, but it was a mirror universe mission and my character killed her mirror counterpart that had been assimilated.  Other than that, neither of my characters have encountered any Borg.  Cardassians, occasionally.  Other species...many times!  Even one that suddenly appeared, married my character because it had been written and then vanished again ;)

Okay, I'm rambling so I'll shush now :)  In closing, I think an RPG is only as good as the people who run it and the rules they play by.  I've looked around and I love the RPG I play on!    Oki, I'll shush now ;)

The RPG I belong to has been around for quite awhile. I've been a part of it for 10 years now.

Peace!
