What is the earliest copyright for a star trek book ? More specificly what was the title of the first star trek book published? I ask because one of the students I work with says that he saw a star trek book from the '50s. I told him no, because the series didn't start until 1966, so books ,at the earliest , would've been published in the early '70s. I know I'm right because I never read about or seen a book that pre-dates TOS.

Thank you, and I also learned something new. I didn't know they started publishing a book series while the original was still on the air.

I believe the first series of books were actually the first 5 logs from the series, the run of books though if I am correct really did not take off until "The Motion Picture" was published,  though comic books were all the rage up to that time ...

No, the Star Trek Log books by Alan Dean Foster are novelizations of TAS episodes, and did not come out, obviously, until after TAS. The books called simply "Star Trek" (followed by Star Trek 2, Star Trek 3, etc.) by James Blish were the novelizations of TOS episodes, and they came first. These were later put into hardcover editions called "The Star Trek Reader" (I, II, III, etc.) Blish also wrote a novel called "Spock Must Die."

SeerSBG is right. "Missions to Horatus" by Mack Reynald was the first actual novel. And the "Star Trek" series by Blish began being published around the same time to just a little later.
