I thought S&T was for, you know, the smart posters to discuss stuff.  Couldn't you have just put this in 10F where it belongs?

By 2014 the Marines are actually supposed to have established some type of space based military presence. When that happens, no more reason to fear.

To be sure, the truest enemy of the old United Nations and the people of Earth was the Malignant Extrasolar Intelligence (MEI) -- evil aliens from beyond the solar system, who made their way to Earth with the sole intent of subduing and enslaving the people of Earth in the year 2012.

The years following humanity's initial Pyrrhic victory against the MEI were both stark and resplendent. Half-billion remaining humans labored long and hard to reestablish basic infrastructure and civil services throughout the globe.

Nevertheless, long-standing grievances between governments and religions vanished, of course, as people realized the only hope for humanity¿s survival was global unification.

At first, UN military forces needed to assess the MEI threat. If the alien spacecraft were generational, lacking faster-than-light travel, Earth might have 40 or 50 years to prepare for a retaliatory strike. Then, science teams could back-engineer alien technology to create orbital, cis-lunar, and trans-cis-lunar materiel and installations for the newly minted United Earth Defense Force.

Thus, the United Nations was succeeded by United Earth. And overnight improvements in space systems, propulsion and armaments enabled a ring of defensive platforms at the cis-lunar LaGrangian Points, plus a grid of lunar-based missile complexes deep within the Moon¿s regolith. Defense systems on Earth included both minor planetary force screens, projected above Earth¿s ionosphere, and municipally improved energy shielding for larger cities on Earth.

The jewel in the crown, however, of the United Earth Defense Force was its Fleet of corvette-, mid-destroyer-, and cruiser-class space vessels: namely 32 corvettes (11-person crew), 17 mid-destroyers (43-person crew), and 8 cruisers (102-person crew), each ship named for a fallen Earth city, that is, USS London, USS Moscow, USS Beijing, etc.

In addition to the hub of space-based infrastructure within cis-lunar space, three other important defense perimeters existed for the Fleet: the sun (from possible MEI nova-producing weapons), terraforming efforts on Mars, and various commercial mining teams within the Asteroid Belt.

A quote from the Roman writer Flavius Renatus provided the motto of the United Earth Defense Force: ¿Vis pacem, para bellum¿ (Seek peace, while preparing for war).

In the spring of 2042, Major Thomas Rodgers, UEDF, from his post at Aristarchus Plateau, Lunarbase 11, relayed telemetry from Cis-lunar LaGrangian Point 2 (L2) to the C and C at L1: "Spacecraft are emerging from beyond the far side of the Moon..."

His complete transmission indicated a returning MEI invasion fleet, registering tens of thousands of kinetic marks, shortly before his command fell silent.

Hmn i seriously doubt any invasion is coming up in 2012-- UK goes entirely Digital in 2010, i dont think the world could cope with an invasion of any size. The invasion force would be way past Digital, lol. If we are invaded our best defence would be ground combat probably, what is a nuclear warhead going do to a ship that has just traversed ?afew thousand light years. They would prob shoot the thing before it even reached them and yawn while doing it haha.

If we had enough time, we could swap out the smaller yield 1 and 10 megaton devices for the higher yield 100 megatons. And about twenty of those per missile times X number of launch sites....

Unless they can take a few gigatons worth of death per minute, I doubt anything would survive such an onslaught. If they have Point-Defenses and Electronic Counter-Measures that can defeat and spoof the missiles, then is becomes an battle of attrition: all we have to do is overcome their defenses by pouring out the hurt as fast as possible, saturating their PD/ECM systems until a few slip past and hit. Then more will hit and so on until....

KABLOOMY! One dead mothership.

Probably a bit costly (monetarily speaking), but it is the best idea I can come up with on a short notice.

Is this Mothership in orbit?

Low or high...

Of course we don't have the missiles to carry warheads into Space. Just near Space and then they fall back to Earth as they were designed.

The larger ICBMs are basically the same as the smaller satellite-carring rockets. Just change the guidance systems alitttle and add some extra fuel.

And if the mothership is stupid or arrogant enough, they'll be in low orbit and have to face multipule missiles comming on two differant general bearings (launchers in Russia, China and the US, among other sites), effectively dividing their defences in half.

Wouldn't work, ICBM are not active guidance, they work basically on Fix target. Any craft in orbit would be able to detect the launch via infra red detection of launch Plum and be able to lift into a higher obrit and the ICM would be unable to adjust to target them.

Any race capable of traveling from one star system to the next would have propulsion system light year ahead than standard rockets and missiles which basically would have very narrow window to incept target. Any craft with high greater thrust or ISP factor could easily avoid missiles with lower engine power.

Missile combat in space basically is a factor of who has the better propulsion. That why Beams weapons would best bet in space combat.

If an we are attacked, the attacker could easily place a base on the moon and simply hurl large chunk of moon rock at us, any piece greater than 3 meters in diameter would survive reentry and strike with the force of a tactical nuke. They could literally end all resistance by throwing rocks at us..

As it stand we bearily able to incept and target missiles that have a fairly predictable path and obrit, against alien invader with classical descripted behavior of UFO, such as 90 degree turn and massive acceleration most of our weapons system would be useless. The only real weapons would be the fairly recently develop tactical lasers, but due to the low power that we presently can generate it wouldn't be very effective.

If we were attacked by an assault force from a different race outside of Earth, It would be fairly assured that all of the known defense systems would be rendered useless.

NBM's (Nuclear Ballistic Missiles) most likely would not make it to their target's in space as the assault force would have better technology to counter these missiles.

We would most likely suffer heavy losses from orbital bombardment craft that would target most large cities and military complexes.

Then the land assault would begin. If any military was left they may halt the advance but would succumb to the technologically superior weaponary of the assault force.

Our best hope would be those secret military complexes that don't exist would get a hold of some tech from the aliens, reverse engineer the technology and carry the day for humanity.

Or we can just show them a picture of Lancer Omega

HAHAHA

We don't know if Humanity would stand a chance. Why because we  haven't been attacked in this manner yet. But give it time and when the first conquest driven species outside of humanity finds us, then we will know how tough humanity really is.

Okay-ramming speed, great-it is a good day to die-ground combat realistic-unless they have forcefields. ?Nuclear warheads-most realistic. ?What about EM discharges?

Forget ICBM's or space command or missilles that can fall back to Earth to destroy what's left of humanity-Prepare for intergalactic war? Well if we've had since 1947 then it stands to reason that preparation can be done by procrastination. So we need to draft all the procrastinators right now and ship them to Iraq for their safety because if we don't do the right thing right now then bad things will happen and people will die.

PRAY Mr. President.-If there's intergalactic war it looks like PRAYER is the best hope.
