Why does it seem like there are so many more failing SIMs or ones that go inactive, than there was a while back?

Tell me about it. The guy who plays Captain Picard on the Enterprise (and also the Captain on the Camelot) just abandoned us after our first mission.
The Excelsior's been recruiting for months and we only have five crewmembers.
Only three out of nine crewmembers are even bothering to post on the Intrepid (allthough we're concocting a fairly interesting plotline)

:(

Because I think a lot of fleets would give a command to a monkey if he wrote a half-decent application.

Remember, anyone is capable of throwing together a website and making a ship, but I'd say only about 10-15% have the ability and experience to make the sim successful.

I'm in a few.....two are hanging on quite well..though we could so with some more people..and the others...not so hot!

and that new enterpise one...yeah...I joined that too and its gone by the wayside...as you say...after the first mission! why bother create sims if you know you can't offer some form of commitment? On one of mine, Im having a role-call, by next sunday....people will be out if they dont reply. Looks like Ill have a hard-core little group of about 7 -8 people..but im happy with that if its the case!

Independent simulations, even ones that have been running for years, are starting to run into trouble. My personal suspicion is that it has to do with a lack of Trek on the air/in theatres -- dwindling interest overall leads to less new blood.

Additionally, new games are damned near impossible to get off the ground unless you have a very experienced command team, with good plotlines, and something special recruiting-wise.

Man the two sites I'm on is pretty good just need some more people and stuff. I would hate it if they go inactive becuase I actually have fun. Plus I'm actually a Trek fan too. I just hope they pick up soon.

domo arigato and I run a very successful board, but it's next to impossible to recruit anyone new. One of the other boards that I run is starting to lose momentum and another that I'm involved with died before it even got off the ground.

It seems like the big Fleets have no shortage of members, and my boards have been offered admission, but I don't want to give up my independence, you know?

Excelsior's in a 'big fleet and we're crashing and burning.

I wish they would do a new serial based on the success of the Next Generation, that would get interest in Star Trek going again. The other formats were not so good. But TNG has a successful format. With a newer TNG onboard, I reckon interest in things Trek, including RPGs, will take off again!

With a neat website and good ideas, anything can happen. However, it is true that being in a fleet can help. People like the reassurance that there is always someone above the CO's head in case something goes wrong.

It's much more than that.  An organization helps in recruitment and makes sure there's a certain standard kept.  It adds roleplaying possibilities that aren't possible in an independent sim.  It also takes off some pressure from the CO.  If they need a break, worse case somebody could temporarily take over.

What I did not see mentioned here - a sim requires a lot of hard work and the command team must be willing to put that in.  It's not only a website and having ideas.

Just like a sim, not everybody can run an org.  Therefore, by definition, not every org must be successful.

My fleet broke off from another large one and we aren't failing persay, but we're definitely needing new blood to pick up interest.

It's hard to recruit anyone long enough to see who would be a good captain.  The captains make it all possible.

many of you are right I think it may have to do with the fact that many are losing interset with ST, and it may be because of SIMs like the example given by Shuttle

The first post will usually involve Captain Dunsel touring the their "ship" and boasting about it, the second post is most often the flying weapons station leaving spacedock, the second usually involves a one-sentence post with a report of a Borg cube - and then the predictable follows...

If I may lend some more "item's" to this discussion.

I believe, I don't know about you guys but in my belief alot of people are not only losing interest because of what is listed above ( don't get me wrong what said above is about 50% of the deal ) but also because of RPG structure. I have been increasingly noticing RPG's using advertisement in their story just like Burgerking and Mc.Donalds do, "We are the best".

The common ship is structured as following along with my common pet peaves about ST RPG:

1.The best ship ever made, can go into enemy territory be armed with the best phasors, Torpedoes and destroys ALOT of stuff and come out, maybe a dead unknown crewmember and a scratch on the Captain's ready room window thats all, nothing to much.
2. The whole crew is Valadictorian graduating top of their class and containing the highest awards for bravery, honor.
3. They all seem to be somehow able to master over one area of interest even though it is possible but HIGHLY unlikely
4. Solutions to problems just some how seem to POP into the heads when a problem needs solving
5. If you haven't noticed, every time some one goes to a bar or some version of 10 forward they are almost always by themselves looking out at the stars and depressed and looking like a complete loner.
6. Remember that Borg cube we fought yesturday? Well destroyed that one with 3 superuberultraviolent qauntom torpedoes.
7. People in RPG's hate to lose, so therefor everytime they start to, somehow the ship of person is suddenly equiped with what ever is more powerful.
8. In my BIO it says I'm a war hero and have been shot 4,852,642 times and lived, WOW!
9. Guess what! my parents are dead, I'm depressed and have some sort of mental problem, had a bad childhood... get used to it, your not so unique after all, so has the rest of the crew.
10. Our security chief can just think of a crime, or hostile stitutation and just BAM, were out simple as that.
11. Captain Hailfire, Lt. Hookmen and petty officer Gillard go on an away mission, let me ask you, whos not coming back?
12. Well looky here theres Matt Damon, oo theres some hott model lady, OMG Brad Pitt, YAY, this is the USS Stallion the best freakin ship in the sector flag ship of so and so fleet and filled with hot people that we all wish we could look like.
13. I love going to sickbay, this is my 5th time in a single day
14. Your taking heavy fire, and somehow you are able to dodge every shot, wow must be like a video game, the enemy must not be able to shoot but the good guys would pass sniper school with ease.
15. There are bad people out there that win you know!
16. Fire phasors, O no, they don't work any more we don't know what to do.
