Some of the best and most important discoveries have been accidents. The Anubis class destroyer is one of those happy accidents. Originally built for no better reason then to test the saucer section of the new Prometheus class cruiser she was a mating between this experimental saucer section and an adapted stardrive section from an Akira. By the time the Dominion War started the Prometheus project was well under way.
When StarFleet began suffering hevay losses plans were made to dismantle the Anubis and use her for parts. While undergoing system checks a Dominion task force invaded the system. The systems garrison force was barely enough to repel the invasion, and the Anubis herself had to be called out to defend helpless ships berthed at teh dock. Oddly she performed her task admirably. With only ten photons and operating at only 70 % efficiency she was instrumental in the defense action.
StarFleet now began looking into creating a vessel with the Anubis's general designs and capabilities. The Anubis herself was kept in service until her design could be reviewed by the Advanced Starship Design Bureau. After finishing their review several changes were proposed to the ship. Losing the ability to separate her saucer freed up a considerable amount of internal volume, eliminating the need for a second warp core and nacelles in teh primary hull, and getting rid of impulse engines in the secondary hull. The space freed up was given to type U and type X phasers that would arm the saucer. Type XII phasers were considered, but a reduced role, the end of the war, and a need for greater warp streamlining meant a 25% reduction in size, which meant that there was no room for the heavier weapons.
In 2383 the Dominion attacked again. This time aided by not only the Cardassians and Breen, but the Romulans as well. They had been preparing for this since the end of the first war. Negotiations were undtaken wih the Romulans and Klingons almost as soon as the peace agreements had ended. The Romulans signed a full alliance, the Klingons, too proud to something so dishonorable merely signed a non-aggression pact, they knew they were unprepared for war and did not want to see so many die needlessly again. The Tholians and Gorn, noting that the Federation was under attack from three sides, took the chance to launch attack into Federation territory. Surrounded and with no chance of aid can the Federation survive?
The USS Hindrance is an Anubis class vessel with a singularly unique purpose: to train StarFleet Academys elite students. Crewed by Red Squadron Cadets under the supervision of seven full officers and an almost full compliment of Elinsted grades. She was reprovisioning at DS9 when the attack began. She helped in the defense of the station, but when the dust settled, the crew found that they were lightyears behind enemy lines. They recieved a message, Earth was threatened and the Dominion had turned on the Romulans. All this, and it was only hte first day of the invasion. Captain Greene decided that they would try to make it to Romulus and safety. After six days of travel they were attacked by a trio of Dominion Fast Attack craft. Within minutes it came down to the damaged Hindrance, most of her commisioned officers dead or mortally injured, against a similarly damaged Dominion ship. Captain Greene was nearing death, but directed the rest of the battle from the bridge. With no engines and Life Support failing he ordered the engineering crews to fix the weapon systems. Half an hour later they blasted the crippled Dominion vessel into atoms. His last action before death was to promote Cadet Captain Jack Ryan to Acting Captain, with all the rights and responsibilities that came with. Since then they have been trying to reach Romulus. They don`t even know if the Romulan Star Empire still exists, but with the alternatives...
