Oh, dear. This sort of thing is always difficult. I'm going through something similar: a student of mine who hadn't been in class for a while was found dead in his apartment last weekend. While I wasn't extremely close to him, I had taught him in another class and liked him.

The other thing that really bothers me is that he was downsized to a half-time employee sometime ago, which means he lost his health insurance coverage from our employer...when he took ill, he had nothing. He was forced to go without chemo and the like that might have saved his life-or at least make him more comfortable. It makes me sick to come into work, knowing this. I'm conflicted.

That's really low. And sadly not at all atypical in today's corporate world.

How do you know? You spend time with him at the White House? ¿ |
Who knows, probably he's having fun by spamming this very message board. |

Peregrine and Gorby my sympathies for your losses. That gentleman losing most of his health insurance and not being able to afford chemo is nothing but a crime in this the supposedly richest country in the world. Unfortunately that is a symptom of corporations who don't care in the least about the human aspect of their companies, and an administration that doesn't even look the other way, but assists them in taking benefits away.
I remember in the late 80s and early 90s when more than 40 guys I knew had died of AIDS, no one wanted to pay any attention to that crisis either...

It's an absolute CRIME that in this country working people can't afford health care. Basic health care ought to be a RIGHT and not a luxury. But, I guess because our forefathers didn't happen to have the foresight to add that one explicitly to the Bill of Rights that it may never be the right of an American citizen. When I began working here, I honestly believed that I worked for an employer who thought differently...now it seems that I was mistaken. Maybe the 24th century will be different.

Maybe if we clap our hands and say "I believe"---and also work really, really hard at it---we can make sure that the 21st century will be different.
A tip for those with no health insurance--NEVER go to a doctor. I, for one, have no idea whether or not I have a severe illness. Ignorance is bliss, or something. If I want health insurance, I'll just have to move to Israel.
Very sorry for your losses, Peregrine and Gorby. And, however belated, for your many, many losses, NJ.

My condolences to Perigrinec, Gorby and John. I'm glad to live in a country with health insurence, but it's not that we don't have other problems.

My condolences to Perigrinec, Gorby and John as well. Also IW i know the feeling of health insurance. Though my job covers it, the insurance I have is crap.
