Many of us would have attended the ST 40th in Vegas.  There was a lot of positive things about the conference, but there were some things which could have been done better.  This post aims to provide a place to collate comments and share experiences, good and bad.

Some rules please:

1.  Criticisms shoud be constructive.  No absive language or derogatory comments.
2.  Please show respect for those who have a different opinion than you - infinite diversity in infinite combinations
3. Please be honest and take time to think about what you are saying.
4.  No capitals.  Any postings with capitals for words, should be ignored by all as capitals are considered as "shouting', and we're not literary deaf.
5.  Get posting!

To get this going, I will dtart by making a few comments and criticisms myself.

1.  I thought creation did an excellent job getting so many actors together in one place at one time.  It was truly an experience for all who attended, especially those who were there for the first time.  All evidenced by the record breaking attendance for a Star Trek and Sci Fi conference.

2.  I think it be useful to have had a clock somewhere in the building perhaps in the main ball room as none was available in the whole of the Hotel with the exception of the Buffet Restaurant. Those of us travelling from the UK may have had to leave our electronics behind because of the bomb scare.  This made it very difficult keeping time for performances, autographs and photo ops.  A clock would be a massive help.

3.  The air conditioning definately needed a more hands on approach as all of the events in the main hall with the exception of one, were held in sub artic conditions.  It seemed a bit daft to be sitting in our jumpers and jackets when it was 120 degrees outside.

4.  The quality of food for the evening dinner on Friday, Saturday and the early morning breakfast charity events were very (very) poor quality.  The food was cold and the coffee was luke warm.  The plus side of this was that it provided an excellent opportunity to meet the actors one on one for a period of time (2 minutes at our table, but some quite a bit longer).

5. I found it frustrating to pay over $400 dollars for my Captain's Chair seating only to have my view blocked for most of the weekend by the videographer cameras.  As a result, I watched most of the shows on the big screens and could have done this from the back of the hall and saved myself a fortune.

6.  It was also frustrating to pay for the Captain's Chair only to have preferred seating visitors or general visitors coming down and sitting on spare seats, or worse still, standing in front of my row taking photographs meaning that I couldn't see.

7.  It was very unprofessional and rude to commence the deconstruction of the stage and the taking down of the banners whilst Michael Dorn was still speaking.  I felt this was very poor and could have been postponed for the 20 minutes this would have taken.

8.  The service at the Hilton was one of the worst I have experienced.  None of the staff were helpful at anytime, the never smiled or greeted me, yet expected to be showered in dollar note tips.  I met many people who independently felt this way too and I think creation should take this back to the Hilton, as we will individually, as there are clearly cultural problems within the hotel.

9.  A good suggesion would be to have a room set aside next year which constrantly plays Star Trek episodes and movies particularily when there are periods of down time such as actors not turning up and breaks between actors.  Besides, it would provide a fun social environment for trekkies other than the commercial stalls.

10.  Trekky speed dating for singles could be fun!!!

11.  I think the end of the conference needed a crescendo rather than a sudden end after Michael Dorn.  Especially being the 40th, it just seemed to wimper and end.

That's it for now.  I'm sure there will be more later.

Sam.

I was a little frustrated at the lighting. I was in row L, captains chair ticket, and I understand the need for people to remain in their seats so there isn't a huge crush of fans trying to take the celebrities pictures. But for God's sake, for those of us a few rows back, increase the lighting so the pictures we do take are of decent quality. Last year Patrick Stewart was there, and the pics that I have of him are somewhat dark. Also, quicker signing for some of the guests. Again, I was in row L, and last year Avery Brooks took two hours just to get to our row.

I think if they played the audio from the Gene Roddenberry Theater in the Dealers room  people would miss less while waiting on line for photo Ops .

The puppet show was insulting, obnoxious, and repetitive.

I agree, and I think this is why Majel and Gene left the auditorium.

In no particular order:

1. The food quality was really sub-par. At the opening night "Chocolate on the Edge of Forever" party (which cost $65 per ticket), we were treated to trays containing Hershey bars and bags of M&Ms! What chocolate "fondue" was there was awful Hershey's syrup served with melon balls. Really awful, clearly no-one wanted to spend one dime more than necessary to put something on the table. Had it been a restaurant, I would have walked out.

2. Organization. Creation did an admirable job with the number of celebrities and attendees. What would have helped is more signage and organization for the long lines. Setting up stantions to flow the traffic? Signs indicating what line is for what purpose? Too many times, it just felt like chaos. For that matter, sending out passes early then making people wait in line again just seems foolish.

3. Politeness. At one point, I approcahed the stage to take a photo, and an usher jumped in front of me and told me to back off. I pointed out that I was wearing a press pass, and he said "we don't care who anyone is." I replied, "yes, I've gotten that impression all weekend."

4. A/C: good lord was it cold in there.

5. Decoration - from the check-in to the hallways to the "party" rooms, where were the decorations? The few banners that were dwarfed by the gigantic walls didn't impress upon me that I was there for a celebration.

6. Speaking of parties, where were the room parties, get-togethers, etc? Some of the Creation-sponsored parties were fun, and Quark's was a blast Saturday and Sunday nights, but what about those of us who don't have gold tickets who want to kick back with other fans? Hospitality suite, anyone?

How about lower prices so people with lower incomes can come too. It was $150 just for general admission plus food, hotel, transportation, autos, photo ops etc. so I was unable to go, and would LOVE to be able to go to a true Star Trek convention

Yea wednesday night was horrible.  I got there a few minutes late since I had problems wth tickets.  When I did get in there nothing was left and I was told that was all we were going to have.  After spending a lot of money on the ticket you get kinda mad when they say you cant have anything.

There seemed to be nothing for people to do if they didnt have gold passes.  I was bored out of my mind looking for stuff to do and I didnt have a lot of money for gambling nor did I feel like walking the strip.  It would have been so nice to have a place to kick back and watch a few episodes or movies or something like that.  Even if the movies and such were made by fans.

Oh and breakfast saturday was a little on the cheap side.  When  I got to the buffet table, they barely had anything left.

I agree whole-heartedly.  And the room was freezing, the only time I was comfortable was when I was wearing jeans and a hooded sweatshirt.  It's a good thing I didn't need to go outside.

I only have a few complaints about the convention:

The puppet show. I mean, WTF?! is the only way to describe it.

It was pretty damn cold in the auditorium. A raise in temperature would have been good.

Photos. People who have normal cameras can hardly see what the picture was when it's developed if they were way in the back. Letting people up to the front for 1 picture wouldn't hurt if they went back to their seats when they were done.

WHAT ABOUT THE PEOPLE THAT CANNOT DROP $660 FOR GOLD PASSES?! What are they supposed to do while the rich snobs have all the fun at the extra events?

Alright, I'm done.
