For those of us who decide to be a captain of our own ships who would want the option of making their own Captain's Log entries? What would they look like? Would others be able to access our logs? I think this would add a new level to the game. Players could access the ships computer and scroll through the various commands. Perhaps a ship encountered a foe or problem previously. A ship's captain could compile research to assist them with whatever they are currently dealing with. We have seen this done on the shows and movies.

Logs would be cool, but I can't see them being saved in any other way than how screenshots are saved.  So this would end up just being something for your own use, and it wouldn't really have any kind of impact on the game.

I was thinking about this earlier, because I thought it would be handy tool for captains and exects. It would be a good way of keeping track of who would be do a promotion and other such things. I think it would fairly easy to put in. It wouldn't have to be much different than character bio sheets. Only they would have to give a secureity feature, just in case you wright a bad review of a crew member, and don't want anyone but the captain to see it. :D

I will like to see bad review of others player.
My time in a MMO saw mant different type of player. Most of them are very good player. The ones that give other a hard time does not stick around to long. A log for everyone to use for them self will be nice.  :)

Hey, you know...I'm liking this idea.  Captains and Admirals having their logs documented on a 'message board' perhaps--accessable to themselves and the Admiralty?  Admirals could use these logs for researching and make more effective policy!  Perhaps part of the game is how well Captains feed the Admiralty's need of information.  Captains' logs could be a critical feature of the game for upper-ranks.

The drawback to this system is that of rivalry: Suppose a Captain or a senior officer has it in for a player (not the character, the player themself) and gives them a rotten review just so they'd get passed up for promotion?

I'd *love* the opportunity to record a captain's log, but unless handled very carefully, it's very much open to abuse.

I have heard this as oposition before, but I'm not following. This would be a tool for ship captains to use to evaluate the crew, and base promotions from, on their pc ships. Not just randomly throughout the game. If a captain has it out for a crew member, then why would they even have that person in the crew in the first place? Crews will most likely be guilds. I don't see someone starting a pc ship and fill it with total strangers that are not apart of their player association. I'm sure that some uber ganker would get his jollies off doing this, but it would be a very isolated case. And also, this would not be for determaning game rank, but only rank aboard a specific pc ship. As I hope that rank and posision on pc ships will be totally different from character level, or whatever they decide to call it.

This a cool idea. I have hopes the game will do kind of an "auto" Captains Log anyhow, with your actions. Also, I would like to see an option to jettison a log bouy if your ship was in trouble, or a marking bouy to warn other players of danger.

Well, I'd like to think that the vast majority of captains will be judicious and fair-minded, but I do see your point.  Of course once a Captain gets a reputation for being ideological or just plain vindictive--the admiralty would know to take what their reviews with a large grain of salt.  Or we might just institute that Captains' logs are not the appropriate forum to handle personnel problems or performance reviews.

Yes I see it more of a player documenting their own missions. It would be nice to read other player's log to see how they handled a situation that we may have dealt with as well. Compair notes and what not, just to and see what they did. I didn't mean for a captian to rate other players, that could get very ugly indeed.

When I first worked  on a forum for STO I was looking to implement this within the forum itself, I didn't even think of PE putting it in the game so I wanted a place for every single member of the forum to have either a captains log or an individual mission log. If they put it in the game it will save me some extra coding, that's for sure.

As long as it stays private and isn't used for in-game promotions. That should remain regulated by the game and not the players.

Its not like its hard.
Earth and Beyond I recall had a "Captains Log". A little log book you could write/store notes for later reading.
Most other games I have played have also had the option to log your chat in a text file.

If its there, it will be a nice touch but its not like its an effort to implement.

Great ideas!

I think the Captain's log should be a way to add comments to the natural game-generated mission log.  This document, altogether is available some deal of time later (around three months) either on the message board or on the in-game archives.  These logs are rated on mission success, and other stats.  At the Archival Station at Starfleet Academy (or elsewhere), you can review the captain's log on how they were successful and what they learned.  You can replay the mission via holodeck taking some officer's place.

And of course, the Captain can always check his log at any interval and review situations and notes.  Perhaps a specific Klingon may have some faction points against you personally and you might need to refresh yourself when you plan to meet him again, 2 real live months later.

All players should have logs, as the series suggests.  They simply become 'captain's logs' when you become Captain.  :)

Yes, a Captains log should be automatically generated for each mission run, and each 'encounter', etc... I would like to be able to add comments of my own to the generated log as well.

It would add a real feeling of being a Starship Captain to the game.

A Captain's log or Personal Log would be a nice addition computer-side, not server side.  There should be a way for people to export the files for fleet/guild purposes.

As to personel records, maybe just track some general player statistics: name, when they "graduated" starfleet academy, which ships they were permanently posted to for what dates ("fleet guild ships", not every starship you can sign out of a HUB), dates of rank, their department and specialty, rank, experience, and any awards or commendations.

Just a generic personel file with close up of their avatar's face for anyone to access.  Give fleet/guild recruiters a little info to work with.

I'd also like to see similar logs kept on the fleet/guild assigned starships..... give those ship's a history to follow as well.
