Hey all

I would like to learn how to suppress emotion, like the Vulcans do. Anyone come up with a way we mere humans can achieve such control?

You could try meditating maybe.

Nope sorry, you need pointed ears and speak logically to be able to do that. ¿
Seriously, some type of meditation tapes or books may help.

Emotions can sometimes cloud your mind and you are unable to think clearly in a situation.

Being able to govern, at least in part, your emotions would be of benefit to some people.

I'd say the Borg would be a little different, Vulcans are still individuals ;)

I figured some kind of meditation would be involved, it is after all a central part of Vulcan emotion suppression and such. I'm kinda looking at a more "How To" sort of thing, exactly HOW to meditate, and whatever else, to have at least similar ability to control emotion.

Learn to integrate your emotions with logic for a harmonious balance.

I would say mood supressing drugs but that is just a corny answer and not a very good thing to do. Maybe you can try Buddist/Taoist meditating books.

Yer, I think drugs are a bad idea LOL.

Obviously, meditation of some description is the way to go. Unfortunately for me, I know about as much about meditation of ANY description as a potato understands the origins of the universe, let alone emotion-suppressing, logic-inducing Vulcanised meditation! Google isn't helping me much either.

If the LOTR guys can come up with virtually an entire Elfin language, surely we can come up with a Vulcan-like logic and control philosophy and means of enforcing it upon our psyche! I say if we can't find something out there, we devise a way to do it ourselves!

If we can rid ourselves of the baggage of needing to possess items, monetary gain and 'wanting' things for no reason, i feel we will also gain emotionally as well.

meditation does not supress emotions, it helps the meditator to understand his/her emotions...there is s difference.

I mean "suppression" by Vulcan understanding, not traditional human understanding. Suppression in this regard IS about understanding the emotion in a logical context and processing it as such. Not denial or repression of the emotion and not allowing it to surface, but dealing with it logically so the need to express it is no longer required. That's my understanding on how Vulcans suppress their emotions, not by denying they exist, or even denying them the right to exist. Emotions are experienced, but dealt with on a different level than we're used to.

yes and no. depends ont he kind of meditation.

when you meditate you are aware of your thoughts and that you are aware of this awareness, but you just let the thoughts float off and not dwell on them. keeping your mind clear, but not resisting thoughts that pop into your mind. you do the same thing with the sensations of the body simultaneously. just achieve a state of active passiveness, mentally and physically...

lol ok that doesn't really sound like a very good description but that's the kind of meditation i learned.

Probably not quite the meditation I'm looking for, that is if I understand correctly. It seems to suggest acknowledging the existance of emotion, but ignoring it. On a day-to-day basis, this can probably cause social problems and perhaps psychological problems relating to apathy (of course, this is an excellent way to meditate, it keeps the mind clear and free to focus, and in this regard doesn't cause the problems I just mentioned, however not quite great for the purpose we're looking out for).

Keep giving input, we've gotta work something out at some stage.

you still feel emotions. it just kind of lets you step outside of yourself and be conscious of how those emotions affect you physically and mentally.
