I beleive I read at the offical STO site that you get your own starship depending on your rank. (Starting with Ensign you get Defiant and other stuff going to the Akira class ship).

What will you name your ship, and what class will it be?

NO ONE, other than command officers, should just get a ship at any rank! If everyone gets a ship, what is the point of having crews? And you should be ASSIGNED a ship, name and NCC number and all. You should not just pick a ship and name it the "USS HugAndKiss" or USS "Asskicker" or whatever. Commanders may be eligible for command of small Scout or Destroyer class ships, while Captains and Commodores gain command of Light and heavy cruisers and above.

Being the egocentric Chief Engineer that I am, I would of course make the name of my own vessel a part of me. I'd probably name it something like U.S.S. Whitefire, or U.S.S. Whitefury or something of the like.

Personally, I hope none of us get the opportunity to name our own ships. This is fine for personal or civilian craft, but not for a government-owned starship. I think Perpetual should come up with a vast database of appropriate names (use the existing fan material out there) and come up with a naming convention for the ships that makes sense. When a ship is assigned to a player, one is randomly picked out of the list. Alternatively, if some player choice is desired, allow them to choose their ship name from a pre-generated list.

This is the best way of guaranteeing we don't have a bunch of USS Lollipop's (or worse) running around the galaxy.

(If I had a choice, my ship's name would be USS Destiny of course.)

So let's say we get to name our ships. What happens when we upgrade? Does the name go with you? That seems kinda weird, as there should be a current registry of ship class and names. I would like to name my own vessel, but I think there would too many people making names that would detract from the game. I'd be ok with picking from a list, but there is the potential of running out of premade names.

I don't think running out of ship names is likely. Considering the number of 20th century (and prior) ship names alone, plus all the historical figures that don't have a ship named after them yet, then throw in a bunch of Vulcan, Andorian, and other Federation names and I'm sure you'll come up with several thousand ships. If you still run out, then start using the nearest phone book. Who's to say any of us won't have any relevant historical contributions? (In fact, I keep telling my kids that I'm counting on them to provide for my retirement on Alpha Centauri.)

Um, we'll all be able to at least get shuttles maybe even a runabout as ensigns, doubt we'll be able to get a Defiant as an ensign though.

So far it looks like we will be able to take out ships at any rank, the ship size of course depends on our rank and maybe a minimum crew. I think most of the big ships like the Akira or Sov or Galaxy will require captain rank and a minimum pc crew to run.

We'll also have a chance to take out Temporary Commissioned ships according to our ranks, to use when we don't have one of our own, sorta like having to run a pickup group.

Now as for the topic, it's been discussed before. I think every ship should be named before hand, taken from a list of prelisted names. Captains in Star Fleet have no choice to a name, and ships are usually only renamed on special occasions, like in the case of the Defiant or Enterprise.

If a captain wants to rename a ship then maybe they should use prestige to call in a favor of an admiral to rename to something else on the prelist, or if they want to use their own name, it needs to be submitted for approval first, so we can avoid the USS ROTFLOL types. This of course should be only be a one time use per ship.

No offense Sporkula but this is an example as to why we shouldn't be allowed to name our ships but we would have to choose from a pre generated list.

Think about it; had the Enterprise been named the Flying Dutchman do you think anyone would have taken her seriously?  Hell No!

There are practical naming conventions and realism factors that have to be followed when naming a ship.  IF you notice most Starfleet ships were named after people, events, and places of great importance or influence throughout history.  Most of the time, not all the time but most of the time.  IE: USS Yellowstone (national park on earth), USS Sarek (great vulcan), USS Enterprise (tradition of naming off of iconic american vessels)
