Lets assume we will have have access to the 'virtual' Federation database, and upon character creation, our file is inserted into it, allowing people to check up on us, our history and such.

Obviously, the things that would automatically be put in would be

First Name
Surname
Rank
Job Title
Awards
Medals
Qualifications (as we go up in ranks)
Species
Gender
Picture (a picture of our face)

The things we would put in
Personality report
History
Biography of sorts etc

After you find someone your looking for, you can send them a subspace message etc through the LCARS terminal.

Can you think of anything I am missing?

All that sounds good to me. I really hope the devs do something like that. I believe a game like this will need a good player database so people can keep track of one another. It also needs to include a good search feature.

I played a game called Face of Mankind where there were houndreds of people in each faction and their faction database suck. It didn't tell you anything but name and rank. They could have used a decent database.

That's a good idea. I played a MUD where you had all sorts of info on another person's character, including if they'd ever been married (and who to, and for how long), their general rank in level and rank against other's in the arena. It was awesome, and STO needs something similar.

I would love this feature.  The only thing that worries me about it is database size.  I remember when SWG came out that they had tremendous problems and actually changed a lot of things due to the size of the databases.

So, yes it is an awesome idea but I don't know if they'll be able to do it.

I believe it is a good idea and can help people find the persons they may want for crews.

I would hope that any 'negative' reports (violations of SF/UFP protocols) also be included.

Yeah, negatives will be important. It would be sort of like the report a Captain gets in the real Navy on people who are applying for a new command. You want a complete layout of the person, and maybe it could even include letters from other people as to how they feel about you. You would have to have taken 10 or 20 of their missions before they could submit a letter, and it can't be longer than 500 words, or something.

No, but then again, getting a bad egg into your crew would be as annoying in STO as any other MMO.  Nice to have something at the fingertips to check on someone you are looking at bringing into your crew.

As far as database size... it really doesn't need to be much.  Something in the characterfile on the server.  Linked via database.  Wouldn't require much coding.

I like Admiral's idea. Keep it like they do it in the TV shows.

I don't think that the ability to track your progress and the progress of others would make this game a job. If anything you would be able to track your accomplishments and truely be a unique character within the STO world.

In my opinion, Captains should probably work a little more then others. They should have some degree of real responsiblity that they would have to manage and administor in order to be successfull as a Captain. They will want to look through records and decide who they want on their ship.

This will make the game a much more work driven game but that can actually be kind fun for some people. Think micromanagement, almost every simulation, RPG, and RTS has it. They require the player to actually manage and administrate an army, fleet, city, or group. You can't do any of that without some degree of information about who your hiring or what your doing.

That would be cool, and if someone was looking for people to join their fleets or their ships this would prove useful. As for taking up to much space i noticed someone mentioned a different server or something could solve the problem. I also hope that they dont put a letter restriction on names, cause Im thinking about using my real name just mixed, and it has alot of letters. I also hope for middle name to give it more realism. And i was wondering about Klingons they usually have their house after their name, so will the Klingons be given a house random or something else?
