I'm curious why sometimes they go like warp 3 or 4 for whatever reason. Though if they need to get there in a hurry(As in First contact, with maxium warp) they go max speed. Now as far as i can tell it wouldn't be like a car, with saftey issues and traffic. It's open space and such. Why not blast through fastly.

My only idea was that it has to do with sorta like gas mileage.Going warp 9 will get you there 9 times as fast but use like say 100x for fuel?? Anyone else that can clarfiy would be great to know the science behind it on the shows and movies.

I think this was addressed in a TNG episode....something to do with maximum warp disrupts or destorys subspace or beings living in subspace...

The greater the speed, the greater the fuel and energy consumption. Warping space is not for free... :)

Because it would wear out the engines. A Galaxy-class starship, for example, can only travel at warp 9.9 for 10 mins. Then the engines blow up. Warp 9.6 can be maintained for 12 hours.

through many reasons they travel at lower speeds. much like in a car you wouldnt always belt around at top speed just because it gets you there quicker..(presuming doing such speed is legal)

It adressed the problem as distrupting subspace is why they dont travel at high velocities. in cases of real emergencies they have the authority to travel at maximum warp.

Why go less then the max speed of your car?

Plus, going to Warp in a star system is considered a Very Bad Thing most of the time

There is a finite amount of power, and the faster you go, the more you use.  Going too fast for too long will only burn the engines out.

It's likely the same reason you see semi's on the road traveling at a constant 55-65 on the freeway.  They have set schedules so speeding up merely uses up a heck of a lot more fuel and accomplishes very little if they arrive early.  Same deal with Federation ships for routine travel.

ur thinking of TNG:"Force of Nature".

newer engines don't damage subspace. the Intrepid class has variable geometry nacelles to prevent subspace damage above warp 5. while it is not mentioned, it is assumed that ships newer than the Intrepid series have other mods to prevent subspace damage.

Um, no, that's because it's the law that they can only go 55-65mph.  It's on the damn speed limit signs  :eyesroll:

They went at that speed becasue the writers thought it was stupid to have them at warp 8 or 9 all the time .

lots of the episodes take place in transit from place to place. wouldn't be all that exciting if it only took them a few minutes to get where they're going. there wouldn't be enough time for something interesting to happen like recieving a distress call or some holodeck mishap.

if you went max warp all the tme you would eventualy wear out the warp coils, distort subspace, and burn up your fuel.

In TNG the theory was put forward that warp drive created disturbances in subspace, the activist scientist proved this by creating a subspace distortion using warp fields, any warp speed can distort subspace, but lower levels reduce degredation, the order that warp speed should be limited unless in an emergency was then enforced by starfleet.[B]

I think that I read somewhere that 1.5 is recomended by Starfleet and that warp 5 and higher are only for emergencies. Example: First Contact, Encounter at Farpoint Part I.

Actually, I don't think I really know what I'm talking about.  :)
