The only time I've seen a 'beat-up' vessel in the star trek film/series is after/during a battle. The ships are maintenanced regularly at star bases and never look tired out. They only vary in their designs, but age doesn't seem to imply anything about varying quality. All of the star trek ships look great.
I'm guessing 'beat-up' in this case just means that your first vessel will be more 'simplistic' or basic than what you'd progress to, so that you can learn things from the easy way up to the more difficult. I'm not sure, but i'm interested to know what you guys think about the First Vessel assignment.
From the way I see it, a player should be as happy in a small 'beat-up' vessel as in a Galaxy class ship. They should all have something to offer that the other may not.

I actually look forward to being able to serve on one of these smaller, 'beat up' ships. Perhaps a beat ship could be a derilict? Or perhaps it was decommissioned and put away in storage, in need of much work? I would love to see both of these implemented in the game. I think it would be fun (from an engineering's point of view) to fix up one of these ships.

imo, it should be a junker old shuttle or something. As a noob, you dont need anything but transportation.

I'm not sure that i agree: how will u learn anything about systems etc and getting used to walking around unless you havent served on a standard starship before??

btw when they say 'beat up' they mean old and not as advanced as the sovereign such as the Saber, Nebula, Galaxy, Akira, Intrepida and Defiant classes and with that list i dont want to rule out the older models such as Excelesior and Ambassador classes and besides i want to see a war-game between a Nebula Class and a Galaxy class, you would have to admit it would be intresting to see

Probably a 2nd line ship serving as a courier maybe..
I wouldnt think it would be something like a Sovereign or whatever is the front line vessels of the time though.

I wouldn't exactly call any of those ships 'old' and 'not as advanced'. (Well, with the exception of the Excelsior and Ambassador) After all, the Intrepid has the Sovereign beat because it can travel at maximum warp and cause no damage to subspace. Agree with the Nebula vs Galaxy...that would be pretty fun! lol

The beat up ship can also be a ship like the USS Hathaway in the Peak Performance episode. The ship was 80 years old and almost no dilithium crystals so they were unable to warp until Wesley picked up his science project. I don't think it would be this bad but you get the idea, older ships with less abilities than the newer ones http://www.memory-alpha.org/en/wiki/Peak_Performance
