Why Aren't People Joining Your PBeM?

I invite all educated gamers and mods to add to this instructional guide, provided you have something intelligent to say, and access to a spell checker.

So, why aren't people flocking to your game? Or, even if you get some applications, why are they all fading away soon after you start?

What follows will hopefully be advice that will help you on your way to gaming goodness.

1. Learn how to spell. I can't even begin to tell you how many posts have atrocious spelling, punctuation and grammar. Honestly, if I can't parse out what you're saying in your ad, there's very little chance I'm going to want to do it all the time in a game. If you can't spell, compose your post in Word or some similar program, and run a spell check program. Please.

2. How many games can you really run? It seems that lately at least 70% of the games posted here are by the same three people. Do you really have this much time to devote to telling that many stories? If the answer is yes, than good for you, but honestly, I don't see how any one person can be "Fleet Commander" for six games, plus the Captain of a dozen ships, and the crew of another 10 or so.

3. Why the indestructable ships, kids? As discussed on another thread, there's not much fun playing a game in a super-star-destroyer-giga-galaxy-mega-buster-queen whoo-ha of a boat that can shrug of Planet Buster Beams and slipstream their way up a Q's bum. At least, not for most of us. That's why there's Duke Nuke'Em.

4. I'm tired of the Borg. I think I may be the only one.

5. I'm also tired of 1/4 Klingon 1/2 Vulcan 2/3 Former Borg 1/8 El-Aurians. Come on, people.

6. If you play a character with no flaws, people will hate you.

7. If you play a tragic character with no flaws, people will hate you and talk about you in PMs behind your back.

I now open the floor to everyone else.

RELEASE THE HOUNDS!

I think you've nailed it. Spelling and grammar are big things with a lot of RPers, and a bad ad is not going to get people to join your site.

I'd like to add that PMing people with RP ads and links is usually not a wise course of action, especially if you have an ad on the boards and they haven't posted there. If they're interested in your ad and your site, they'll join. If they aren't, they WON'T. Hence the last part of my sig - "ANY PM CONTAINING AN RP LINK WILL BE IGNORED!!"

I agree with the above.

I would like to add the following though:

Learn to play nice with others. If you haven't figured it out yet, having these so called "wars and battles" with organizations/simulations is pointless. It makes yourself look more like an idiot and keeps people away from simulations that have these wars. Learn to have some maturity.

This is somewhat unrelated, but a point to bring up. The use of images and rank graphics without giving proper credits is a copyright infringment. You will have your website (including Invision Free forums) shutdown. Don't claim that putting up the credits is impossible for Invision Free, you can easily do this by going to your Admin CP -> Board Wrappers and then place the copyrights in the footer area.

Try looking up the artist/website that created the image, how would you like for people to steal your work without crediting you?

Also, for the play by forum simulations, find a skin for your forum. Especially for the large number of Invision Free simulations, it is quite boring to see the same Invision Free standard skin over and over.

this isnt an advert but i think if you are a ship and not in a fledt you have less chances of being sucsesful in recruiting more people. i am in the generation flet and if people arre interested there is a link in the melstone thread. it would hep both of us!

Actually, my stand alone starbase has more crew than my ship and starbase that are in a fleet.

Please don't use this thread as ad space.

Instead, why not read it, and decide if you're guilty of any of the above?

Here are some more:

Posting a link on a recruiting thread that is unrelated (organization wise) is spam recruiting.

Bumping your own topic is a clear violation of forum rules.

If you are unclear on what is considered wrong and what is okay to do, think about the following, would you want someone to do the exact same thing to you.

No one likes recruiters that beg.

If you are going to recruiting for multiple simulations, then condense them into one large ad. Having six topics by the same person might be regarded as bumping and spam recruiting. It is much easier just to put your ads into one large one, plus it is more respectful to other recruiters. This especially goes for those that recruit for fleets. It is spam recruiting when you make 5-6 topics for the same fleet.
