Communication???!

I thought about some ways to communicate within a game... Just imagine you are within a battle and you have to command your ship or troups whatever. It could take some time to type your orders so the others can read (and understand) them. If I ever be in command I suggest my people to download teamspeak or something similar so that we can communicate via headset. It is more effective, saves time, makes more fun (more authentic because you hear the voice of your crewmembers) and you can concentrate your doings on the screen.

When this game releases I will buy a headset, too. Standard equipment from where I'm sitting.

It'd be super cool if the game included something like teamspeak already instead of having to have a TS server etc.

I'd probably rather want them to not include voicecommunication in the game. Not because it's not useful, because it certainly is. It's great.

but I'm afraid having a system like that run through the game could hurt the performance alot, and I don't want more lag than necessary - then rather have TS or Vent running on my own in the background

but what if that ship has a 1000 person crew or even worse if its part of a fleet.lets think 1000 voices all saying something at the same time would be annoying unless you can only talk to people in your deparpment and have the option of pressing something that lets you speak to other people

good point, regardless if voicecom is in the game or handled out of it, there need to be rules. if you have 100 people on board and get into a crisis situation the captain could end up with 99 people talking to him all at once trying to give him advice and all he thinks is "shut up and listen" - but can't get a word in ;)

if some low ensign has something to say - he can tell his department head. if it's important the department head can sort it out and if needed call the captain.

you could also set up your own chat room for your friends aswell and there could be a roomwide chat window as well

How about this, do it like it is in the show.  Only hear the ones that are in earshot, or that has contacted you via communicator.  Of course you could make your own personal ones but in the ship do it like they do.

Hmm... Some suggestions:

In my thinkings I leave out that anyone of us will have a ship with 100 people or more... Future will show us, but for now I don't think that'll ever be reality...

Let's make it simple for now: A ship with 15 crewmen. And of course their is a list of crewmembers. Just add a letter or a combination of letters for every crewman. If you intend to speak to someone press the letter and you only speak to him and he is the only one who is able to hear it. That is near to what pclions has said (communicators). As commanding officer take a letter or number that you press when talking to the whole crew. And so on... I like teamspeak it is comfortable and it doesn't need space on a STO server because you can establish your own teamspeak server as simple as recalibrating the deflector array :D.

There are other options, for example ICQ or MSN or IRC... but could be a problem with that if the game is full-screened so other .exe-files can't be seen on your screen... But that is the same problem: you type and type and type during an away mission on an enemy planet... And you'll type till your death *lol*.

actually ventrillo is the way to go i run a ventrillo and ts server [prefer vent] on vent u can set it up real easy where only one person can talk at a time it takes away the talking over people  plus in major situations most people look for some one to help them understand what to do so they actually will be  quiet and take the captains command

i play wow atm and we use vent and on some major mc or onx runs we have to communicate extremely well and this system works almost perfect

In game voice comms are always way too limiting...  you look at mmo's that have had ingame voice, and virtually all the big clans/guilds use some external voice system (teamspeak or ventrillo)....

And trust me, you can have 5 ships with 20 people each on a teamspeak server and keep the chatter down...  it's called rooms and channel commander.

yeah but there is still the issue that your onboard a galaxy class ship then you would have 1000+ people on board and think about possible expansions think a borg cube now that would be a lot of people

Well, as I understood it, the general rule will be something around 20 people on a ship (of course there will be some bigger and some smaller ones), but I highly doubt we gonna see a galaxy class vessel with thousand or more actual players on it

And if one day you gonna we able to play borg - borg don't discuss, so all chatter should be many with just one voice :D

Where do you get this from. The most that is being said at this point is that, PE isn't sure how they are going to handle the "Big" ships. What we know for sure, is that ships are going to act like mobile cities. Guild sizes range from an average of 40 to 50 people. This is a good size, to usually always have some members on to adventure with. But, I have seen guilds balloon up to over 200 members in some games. That said, an in game voice chat isn't needed. One of the external voice programs will be sufficiant.

I will join or creat a well organized, and disciplined guild, that uses voice chat, and is strongly into roleplaying. People will know their turn to speak while role playing. However, I will also make a character for pvp when that time comes, as I like both play styles. The way my old guild on SWG use to handle pvp voice chat was this. Each group of 10 orless players had their own seperate voice chanel. Then the leader of the whole force would set up about 10 or 15 macro tells that get sent to his division leaders, and they relayed those commands to their group and directed the players on their private chat channel. This required alot of planning and practice, but after everyone got on the same page, we were fairly unbeatable in pvp.
