So I've been reading everything I can find in antisapation of what will probably be an awsome PC game, STO. One thing that I hope will be reconsiderd is the 2d space environment. It seems the devs are leaning heavily toward 2d similar to SFCIII & in my humble opinion I think it's a mistake. I understand that 3d space is way more difficult in many aspects(bandwidth, min spec rigs, game desighn)however in every battle depicted in the Star trek univers ships are moving in 3D not 2D. Kirk would have never defeated Khan if he could only move in 2D, Sisko & the Defiant would have never made it through the Dominion/Cardassian battlefront, Janeway & Voyager would still be stuck inside that giant single cell organism, The Riker manuver in Insurrection wouldn't exist etc.. Sure it will make battleing a starship much more like dogfighting, requiring much more practice & skill in the navigation & tactical dept. but I can see that prob. most people will want to pilot a ship just like everybody wanted to be a Jedi in Galaxies, so making it more challenging would be a good thing. Pitching & rolling of a starship would also be helpfull during battle when the shields start taking a beating. Keeping those week spots pointed away from the enemy, like the bridge.
Z minus 10,000..........

We wrote about it here.... At first I thought it was a bad april fools joke come early... They're making a big mistake... all the current mmorpg space games out there have 3d space... why on earth would the devs think it would be ok to dumb down space? Come on it's not 1995... 3d space is a requireiment to be taken seriously.

It might be like SFC but they said something about being able to go up and down so i'm not sure. Maybe they'll do something like Homeworld space battles. You can go left, right, forward, backward, and set how high your ship climbs and dives, just no rolling. If the system is like that i'll be 100% content.

I'm glad you'll be happy... I on the other hand won't... Dev's need to hear this loud and clear... 3D space, is a requireiment for today's gamer... even mmorpg gamers... Don't be the new SWG.... thinking you know better than your userbase.

papa,
I understand where you're coming from... but you never know they may get hit with a cluestick tomorrow... it's early in the dev process... the real questions will be beta and stress test....
If those are like DDO, it's time to run.

yeah, theyll realise down the road, "hey, you know we do have enough time to code this, yadda yadda yadda..." or we could just get 2million fat trekkies to charge the PE studios and hold them hostage till they do it...just a suggestion...

People are acting like this is going to be like the 2d side scrollers from back in the origional Nintendo days. I believe what the devs have in mind about this is to make user friendly to all. I think we are going to have decent movement in space combat. Forward, backward, left, and right. All in a 3d environment. Tar and feather me if I'm wrong, but I don't think it will be as bad as most are making out to be. At least wait untill you see some examples before you make any judgement.

yeah i think people are confusing directional with dimensional, everything will still be rendered in three dimensions looking beautifull as ever...you just cant turn the ship up or down...pretty much making a helmsmans job consist of nothing but left right, forward (thrusters/impulse), reverse (thrusters/impulse) and your standard warp buttons...yay!

If it is 3d space movement (not at warp) then I hope it is incredibly simple to control. I dont want to have to type stuff in to make the ship move in combat. Joypad/mouse and keys would do me. And having certain 'maneuvers' available by selecting an icon on the screen is fine.

No I understand the difference... but every other mmo space based game today and complete 360 degree movement... The unwashed masses seem to be able to figure those games out.
