FPS vs Turn Based

In the last survey review, one of the developers mentioned that they were possibly moving away from First Person Shooter type combat for another system, which is probably similar to all the other mmos currently out there (wow, ffxi, matrix online, everquest, yadayadaya)

Anyway, if this is the case, I would be extremely dissapointed. One of the coolest things there was about star trek was phaser fire fights, and there were some pretty succesful first person shooters based on that type of gameplay (elite force 1 and 2) That type of gameplay is much more exciting and skillfull, then pointing and clicking and spending hours and hours of your type leveling up attributes so you do more damage per click.

I cant imagine anything more boring than watching from a top perspective view as i click on an enemy and push the 'fire phaser button'
Actually pointing my rifle at him and pulling the trigger is much more exciting and rewarding.

So to sum up, does anyone else agree that FPS gameplay is more true to the star trek universe and should be implemented? Every other MMO out there does some kind of number roll attack and if STO went that way i'm afraid it would just end up white noise as far as the ground combat goes.

And maybe as a compromise what about this idea.
What if the security/tactical job, fought in first person? But the other jobs such as medic and engineering worked from a third person view. Just having the ability to play STO as a fps, opens the game up to a whole nother genre of gameplay, and a whole new genre of gamers.

Before anyone accuses me, no I did not make another account, Harry can check IP if he wants to make sure of it, lol.:) Yes, had a heated debate on this, Daron was even nice enough to respond to my less than stylish rant. I was disappointed too, I knew of course it would be in 3rd person most of the time, but I did think we would have free fire weapons combat and maybe a first person view that could be useful as oppose to normal floating camera first person views of most MMOGs.

I agree that FPS is much better so long as they do it right.  Activision really botched EF2, making it pretty much unplayable in multiplayer.  They never even released a decent patch for it.

Raven did a great job with EF1 though.  It was smooth.  I still play it all the time.

anyone that has played planetside knows how possible and sucessful mmo-fps can be, i hope PE strongly considers going the FPS route with this game, because it could turn it from "the next mmo on the market" to "a revolution to the mmo industry"

see this is where a tactical shooter like Raven Shield comes into play :D

in Raven Shield you only had one hit then ya dead- 1st hit = injured/gimped, 2nd = death)

this would work well with phasers and phase rifles- 1st hit seriously injure, 2nd = vaporised)

and dont forget that they are going to be 3rd person based with the option to zoom into 1st person veiw for who ever wants too (which i think most people will during combat)

yeah and I dont think it should be 100% FPS anyways lol. Since it is an MMO there would have to be some changes, lol i already told how it coul dbe done but ive kinda swayed back and forth on some ideas.

Again, i think it's essential that STO have a FPS element integrated into the combat system, not only to be true to the star trek theme, but to bring in a whole new genre of gameplay and game players.

Imagine if the holodeck FPS experience was such a good multiplayer experience/shooter, that it brought in gamers from such game series as quake and call of duty. Granted, FPS is a much more skill oriented style of play, and thats why i think a good comprimise to balance it with less intensive mmo gamers would be to give the FPS combat style to security forces, and have the rest of the professions be 3rd person, with target-lock-on healing, buffs, debuffs, etc.

omg...ok people. FPS is just a term, it doesnt mean its always gonna be in First Person. Most games with FPS have a third person view.

I love Planetside, it's one of my all time favorite games, but Planetside's limitations as a MMPFPS have to be taken into consideration too.  The reason that there are population locks on continents is that Planetside's (physical) servers could not handle the number of players that were playing on them.  They were hitting the ceiling of what technologically could be done.  This has also been stated as one of the reasons for RPG style combat in STO.  And I can appreciate that (although it could be argued their use of instancing gets around this limitation in most cases).

RPG people are also sometimes scared away anytime you have to use real skills.  I just hope and pray that it doesn't turn into your typical MMORPG combat where you stand there shooting each other until the character with the better stats kills their opponent (with the environment has no affect on the fight).

Xenesis, until STO basically starts coming out with basically weekly development updates you're going to have the same threads appearing again and again.

Thought the population locks in planetside was to prevent zerging of the continents?, not that the server couldn't handle the load, you must be thinking WoW there  :p

Yeah I know, but it's not like this was discussed months ago and the thread was already buried. The new people to the boards need to start reading a few pages of the forums before making topics, hell when I first got here I read about 10 pages worth of topics before I even made my first post.

Once something has been discussed thoroughly in a thread, it gets a lil hard/annoying to repeat again on the same topic in another post, hence why I just linked.

Theres nothing wrong with multiple threads based on a similar issue. It shows that the issue is one that is among the forefront with a majority of different peoples minds. If a certain thread gets upwards of 100 replies on it, do you think whoever is going to post on that thread is going to spend an hour and half reading what everyone wrote so they don't end up saying something that was said earlier?

Not everyone is a forum-nerd and has the time to sift through all those. =/
I just wanted to post my idea and it has a better shot of reaching the communtiy for response in a new thread then it does being post #134239 in an overloaded one.

3rd person shootyness, with the option to zoom the camera inside your head for a first person view.
