When a starship scans a planet from orbit, there will be several things that the away team will need to know. Here are some of my musings on the topic for your enjoyment. :)

The Atmosphere
----------------------------------------
The atmoshpere of a planet could be divided into four basic types:

1) Standard Type - This will be a normal class M type with no concerns for the Away-Team.

2) Low Oxygen Type - This type will be a mixture of harmless gases that has a low oxygen level. A TriOx injection from the Ship's Surgeon will be enough of a suppliment for this type of atmosphere.

An advanced medical skill will provide a potent enough serum to last for the duration of the Away Mission. A basic level of skill will provide a serum that will last for a predetermined ammount of time. This could display on the screen as a countdown for the Away-Team members. If a Medical person accompanies the away team, additional injections can be provided for the Away-Team as needed to extend the mission.

If an Away-Team member does not recieve TriOx as required, they will experience fatigue (no running or jumping) and chronic cyanotic necrosis (a small rate of Damage over Time).

3) Exotic Type - This type will be a mixture of harmless gases that has no oxygen present. A Respiration Mask (a device that synthesizes O2 molecules from the atmospheric gasses) will be enough of a suppliment for this type of atmosphere.

An advanced engineering skill will provide an efficient enough Mask to last for the duration of the Away Mission. A basic level of skill will provide a Mask that will last for a predetermined ammount of time. This could display on the screen as a countdown for the Away-Team members. If an Engineer accompanies the away team, adjustments can be provided for the Away-Team as needed to extend the mission.

If an Away-Team member does not maintain their Respiration Mask as required, they will experience fatigue (no running or jumping) and acute cyanotic necrosis (a high rate of Damage over Time).

4) Corrosive Type - This type will be a mixture of gasses that has a corrosive effect on organic tissues. A full EVA suit will be required for this type of atmosphere. Any breach in the suit will be very serious and require either immediate suit repairs by an Engineer or an emergency beam-out to avoid death.

Gravity
----------------------------------------
Gravity could be divided into three basic ranges:

1) Standard Gravity - This will be a normal class M type with no concerns for the Away-Team.

2) High Gravity - This will be a higher than normal gravity that will affect the Away-Team. Things like running and jumping will not be possible in this level of gravity. Exploration and Movement will be restricted and need to be more carefully thought out.

3) Low Gravity - This will be a lower than normal gravity that will affect the Away-Team. Things like running and jumping will be greatly enhanced (doubled or more) in this level of gravity. Exploration and Movement will be greatly enhanced in this type of environment.

Contaminents
----------------------------------------
Contaminents are environmental conditions that will affect the health of the Away-Team:

1) Biological/Chemical Toxins - These will cause, to a greater or lesser degree, injury to the health of the Away-Team members. If not properly innoculated by the Ship's Surgeon the affected team member will suffer from a damage over time.

2) Background Radiation Levels - This also will cause, to a greater or lesser degree, injury to the health of the Away-Team members. If not properly innoculated by the Ship's Surgeon the affected team member will suffer from a damage over time. High background radiation levels will have a dertimental effect on Away-Team equipment. An Engineer will be able to provide periodic adjustments to keep equipment functioning at optimal levels if present on the Away-Team.

An advanced medical skill will provide a potent enough serum (for Toxins or Radiation) to last for the duration of the Away Mission. A basic level of skill will provide a serum that will last for a predetermined ammount of time. This could display on the screen as a countdown for the Away-Team members. If a Medical person accompanies the away team, additional injections can be provided for the Away-Team as needed to extend the mission.

Lifeforms
----------------------------------------
Lifeforms are detected organic life that could affect the health of the Away-Team:

1) Dangerous Lifeforms - These pose a significant hazard to the Away-Team. Weapons are recommended so that the Away-Team doesn't become a snack for something with big teeth/claws.

2) Poisionous Lifeforms - These also pose a hazard to the Away-Team. While not immediately dangerous, exposure to toxins will result in injury to the health of the Away-Team members. If not properly treated, after the exposure, by a Medic the affected team member will suffer from a damage over time.

3) Contageous Diseases - These pose a hazard to both the Away-Team and possibly the entire ship. Exposure to Contageous Diseases will injure Away-Team members. Infected persons will suffer a damage over time, and also transmit the condition to any others who come close enough.

Standard serums will not necessarily be available for these conditions. If the diseased member returns to the ship, there is a good chance that the crew will become infected as well. The ship's doctor will need to produce a custom serum using the ships lab. I envision this as a mini-game (perhaps matching nucleotide pairs or such) that will be a race against time to produce a serum before the diseased persons die from the condition (perhaps incurring an XP penalty of some kind).
