Ok nevermind that it will be only starfleet at launch. I am talking about when Klingons, Romulans and whoever else gets added as a faction.

The way I see it, there is room for 4 more factions in this game, IF they go with the one server idea. But if they break up the servers, then you will be down to 2 more only.

Anyway, if you have the option to pick different factions, will you and your friends play on the same side, or will you setup teams in different factions, so you can play against each other?

I think that me and my friend would play in different factions if we be able to be in one guild.

But if they do something like in WoW where u got alliance & Horde. Then maybe romulans will be enemy of the federation as it is in ST world  :) and playing together with (romulans, klingons etc.) will be difficult to do

But first we must see the game itself how it look like etc. becouse i dont want to run just with tricoder and scan everything to do smth and not get borred in 5 minutes :)

I'd have to play against my friends, rather than with.  Otherwise, how would I earn bragging rights?

Please explain why the number of factions would be different on a single server as opposed to multiple servers.

In my neck of the woods half the folks who are interested are die hard Klingons.  I'm career Starfleet.
It sure is going to be sweet letting us put our money where our mouth is.

It's an interesting point, as in other games, you can meet up with the enemy or even go into some mode of covert status where you aren't an open target, so going into different factions doesn't affect you meeting up with friends, unless you want to join the same guild, but lots are mixed. With STO we have another problem, you are on your Federation ship, your mate is on his Klingon ship, not really much room for interaction at all, except boaring, lol, meet up on some alien world for no reason, then what?
I would expect that we will be able to send messages to players in other factions if we know their name, as some kind of tell system, so you can keep in touch.
The problem is with STO, is aside from your shipmates, will you have much chance to interact with others from the same faction even, aside from coming home to some kind of spacedock, as the devs have alluded that there will be some kind of home starbase we will all end up using to restock and meet up. I have to say, now that I think about it, it sounds pretty good, enemy players don't become just people you can see around you and you feel some need to insult, even though you can't figure out why (Are you being victimised by the hoard? Are you being victimised by the empire?) they become them, unseen.
I like the idea of finally being able to segregate factions so completely, only games like PlanetSide do this, with home continents, I think it really will make this game more compelling.

I think it largely depends on the type of chat system PE decide to impliment. If there is simply a 'general' channel that all players can enter, regardeless of faction, then I don't see why having friends on opposing sides wouldn't be possible. I don't think you should be able to create cross-faction guilds though, to me that isn't realistic in this type of game.

Personally I would want to be on the same side as my friends. There is a lot more content than pure PvP, and most of the time I don't see people on opposite factions interracting outside of a chat room (tasks aboard your own ship, most away missions wouldn't involved other empires). And when it comes to space combat, a lot of what goes on will be internal to your ship. I think it would be a lot more fun to have a bunch of friends manning the different stations and interracting throughout a battle than simply hailing your friend at the end of a fight saying "I win, goodbye" and flying off home. I think (or at least hope) that there will be an emphasis on teamwork to complete missions and battles, and playing alongside your friends would add to that element.

I think with friends, but the faction would be the federation,
maybe take like matrix online  you have a ship and a crew well the faction again is the federation.

If you are not assigned to a ship or a crew then maybe you will be on a starbase and you will have to go to the assignment office to look for positions aboard ships.

For example:
A Defiant class ship looking for medic and
a Galaxy class ship looking for medical crew novice right up to qualified docter..... or even head docter
depending on the need is where the assignments go.
Say STO has an event... some sort of small scale battle... yet these are few and far between so I would say ..... a rescue mission a ship or shuttle craft was lost in a system and you must race there scan the system and search possible crash sites and find the ( people, data, or technology from primatives )
what have you.   team work can be essentaul have good communications with these team mates is vital and I am for teamplay.

I could also see a player ship go rogue and have all local federation ship converge on the crazys..... there might be player vrs player oppertunity..... not likely....

I would rather play as team mate coop style. even if I am a security guard in a fleet battle and no one is boarding the my ship.

This is a good question. Really it depends on the players themselves. It has turned in my experience playing with the same group of guys for over 5 years now that we have different likes and dislikes when it comes to the games. We usually try to play on the same side but often times end up playing on other sides. But for the most part we do atleast on the same servers play the same sides so we can work together rather then against each other.

Good question. Just speaking for my friends and myself, IF the game allows multiple toons per account (this is key) then we are already planning to have a Klingon, Romulan and Cardassian (if they get in) in addition to the Federation toon at release.

This will allow both cooperative gameplay and adversarial gameplay depending on the PvP environment once new factions are added to the game.

So, it could something as simple as all playing Feds on Mon-Wed-Fri, Klingons on Tues, Romulans on Thurs and free-for-all on the weekends. Of course, this is a tightnit group of six die-hard Trek fans. Your mileage may vary.

Knowing my freinds and family that will play, we will probably mix it up. I would play both Fed-Human and or Vulcan. Klingon difinitely given the choice of multiple characters, but a very crafty minded cousin of mine would most certainly jump ship and play Romulan exclusively.... and he would be my Nemisis I imagine. :)
