Of course we should discuss things, just recognize the fact that

Interpretation of PE's comments can result in conclusions that are not accurate.

Sadly, no matter how many times we point out any inaccurate conclusions, there is going to be someone who comes into this thread and posts without reading the previous entries, thus sparking the debate all over again.

I'm done with this thread.

It should turn out to be like Bridge commander. No Question. If it's 2D then Gamestop, and other reviews will laugh at it, and it will go down as another flub in the history of trek gaming.

heh, sorry if that was a little strong.

but it needed to be said cause it is true. My crew is so pissed about the thought of 2D. If they do that they will loose half their fan base at start.

2D is effectively backward thinking, highly shortcutting, lack of imagination on part of Perpetual..It will look very poor in the reviews...Infact laughable as someone said above...

EVE, SWG are all 3D... Why the 2D plane?

Perpetual I'm not here to play an expensive version of "Starfleet command 4"..... I expect a drastic U-Turn on this...Perpetual cannot honestly believe they can

a)Achieve good reviews
b)Get players to buy
c)Satisfy the Star Trek universe

a game with a 2D plane....

This absolutely has to be 3D based. Arguing that 3D is too complex is, as far as I'm concerned, a total cop out. 3D movement is in no way too complex for people to understand. It's incredibly EASY given the right UI.

Plus, as for rarely seeing ships pitch and yaw on the show I say, wrong! Maybe we didn't "see" it but in many episodes the conn officer is given 3D headings, ie 103 mark 76. That's turn 103 degrees to the right (or 77 degrees to the left) and pitch UP 76 DEGREES. That's 3D! Let's just throw out the fact that it's a TV show for a second and that you rarely saw pitching and yawing because it was easier to film the ship it in "normal" position and say that Star Trek is real. Now, do you really think that every planet each starship has been to is on the same plane? No way. This is just another cop out to 3D.

Thankfully STO is still in early development and this can be changed because this alone makes me not want to purchase this game.

Holy crap this is an old thread.

Anyway, I think combat was more thoroughly explained in the latest devblog.

But players prefer 3d, the devs are suggesting 2d.

If we get them to change NOW then maybe it will be 3D.

PE has stated that there will be 'out of plane manoeuvres'; that's 3D.

They have said 'Navigation will be 2D'.

I suddenly realised, most space combat pen and paper is 2D based, most films use most 2 dimentions, etc.
And the 3D games i know, use it for action gaming, not for battleship like combats.
And my old favorite anime series Starblazers, show an old earth style battleship looking ship fight as an spaceship, mostly using 2 dimentions.

Space HAS three dimensions, there's no denying it. Have you ever seen the Defiant fight like a battleship? What about Klingon Birds-of-Prey? The answer is simple, really. Large starships will not be as maneuverable as smaller ones. Therefore, you won't see Galaxy-class starships doing barrel rolls or loop-de-loops. However, I see no reason in prohibiting smaller ships from pulling off such maneuvers.

I think Perpetual believe they can basically do anything they want to do in this game.  The 2D space combat problem is just one more thing added to a list of shortcoming to this game and the way Perpetual themselves are interacting with some parts of the community and refusing to interact with other parts.

I bet though that people will still go out and play this game once it is released.  We got handed crappy buggy junk games in the past, what makes people think that this game will be any different to the likes of S&S Dominion Wars...a game so overhyped that turned out to be a dud.

Also, if development for this game is going to change so much on the outcry from the fan base of this forum do people in here REALLY beleive that this game will be released in 2007 with a beta test in 2006?  It hasn't got a hope in hell of being released before 2008 the way things are going.
