| Quote (CarlR @ Sep. 09 2005, 8:20 pm) | i just realized somthin the the Question to PE on 2D-3D
| Quote | | Will ship to ship battles be on a 2d plane (like the old SFC series) or will they be on a 3d plane like Bridge Commander and HOmeworld? |
Homeworld is not a 3D controled game, well.. not quite in what i think he wanted to reffered it to. Homeworld is more of a 2D plane with what we mentioned before with the Z axis of up and down applied, only 3D to it, is it has a 3D camera.
for those of you who have played HW 1&2 i think you can understand where i'm coming from. i dont think we are looking for that style of ship control..
just noticed that now, and wanted to share it. |
The Homeworld meovement was fine, except that the ships couldn't face at 90 degrees and travel like that. The way you told your ships where to move was by moving the cursor on a 2d plane, then holding shift and moving to the desired height. Can you suggest anything better? All 3d games are a 2d plane, with a Z axis.. what do you mean??

yes, but Bridge Commander isnt Based on a 2D plain is what i was gettin at, so is Freelancer, or most flight Sim's
I'm not saying that the axis isnt there, but i'm more reffering to the limits on movement control.
perhaps i am wrong with comparing it from a 2D and 3D game, i am not a 2D or 3D expert, but i do know different styles of control and gameplay, i've been a Hardcore gamer all my life.

OK. I haven't played Bridge Commander, how do you tell your ships to move where in it?

when flying the Ship yourself, you have full control, just like any airplane or space Sim. except this one doesnt use a joystick. You can roll, pitch, move diaginaly, roll while moving in any direction, move strictly left, right,up,down, go into reverse, move while in reverse of same mentioned directions. basicly you can do anything and everything a starship should do.
for movement to planets or other sectors/systems there is a menu that pops up when F1 is pressed, select the sector, and then planet you want to travle to, the ship then jumps to warp and in 5-10 seconds you are there and have full control.
for travling to a planet, station or ship you simply fo there your self, in any direction you wish, and so far i havnt found any limits to how far out you can travle. you can even fly intot he sun and planets, or even go inside nebulas.

The realism factor in BC was decent, I liked it better in Freelancer, because you had more freedome with that sort of stuff. But, with what everybody is saying about how ships always move in parallel lines and all that, yes I understand that. I'm not looking for combat to be exactly like bridge commander, I want it to be as realistic as possible without me needing to open up a manual evertime I fly. I personally wouldn't have a problem with moving up and down the Z axis (the kind you can't do in BC) because I want all the options of flight I can possibly have. a ship in space with the right propulsion can do pretty much anything in space, and I think that should be carried over to the game, because that basically goes back to my last post on this thread which no one has really adressed yet, the challenge of being a helmsman and the use of space tactics. We've seen a ship move along the Z axis (TWOK) and we've seen them do everything else in the other series and in BC. I don't find any of that stuff complicated and I'm planning on being a helmsman. I think it would bring realism into the game and give me a challenge every once in a while than what I already do in Bridge Commander and turning left at the metaphasic nebula and then straight through the wormhole, then a left at the red giant.

3d Maya graphics or better IMO. If they can't do this...I'm sorry to say that they should be dismissed.
In the words of our president: Unacceptable.
To support this position as a consumer I again bring up the 'development cost vs. projected profit margin' argument.
Either they are worth the money...or they are not.
As always: IMO.

We aren't talking about 3D graphics, we are talking about the environment. It will doubtlessly be 3D, but with how much of a z-axis?
I'd be happy with an expanded z-axis in combat, for manoeuvres, but otherwise mostly flat plane navigation.
That seems to be what PE is leaning towards too.

-should not be like BC -BC isnt very accurate in the most of modern startrek. (fell short with its lack of starship detail) -i should not need to wait 30 secs for all 4 forward torpedoes to reload(has activision actually seen startrek? they fire 4 to 6 torpedes every 5-6 secs) -BC's so called manual phaser fire was a joke.(why cant i fire my phasers without a target locked on? Hello??! What better way to find a cloaked ship?) -Why does it take about 15 secs to switch from photon to quantum? this is not a submarine, it should only take a few secs. -How come the ships in BC dont have all the proper phaser arcs? -Why do most it not all the fed ships have to same weapons display? -Why the hell does a Soveriegn, akira, and galaxy class have phaser blind spots in the back? There are phaser banks all over the pylons and aft torpedo lauchers. Was activision paying atttention? -i should not need to download 10-30 fancreated mods to make the game more complete towards the movies and series...
-lean more towards Klingon Academy (way more detailed in the options given to you.)
-understand that these are not jets and that gettings behind MOST ships wont give you an advantage. (the attack power should of the back should be equal or close to that of the front of the ship. And very ship to ship.
-understand that a ship doesnt have to lower all its shields to preserve power.
-understand that a ship can shutdown any-one weapon not all of them at onces.
To everyone-dont take after a sucky game made by activision, from what i read they didnt even care how it turned out. Play KA if you some how get your hands on it.

PE, it looks like you better plan on desinging a 3D environment.

I don't understand what the big deal is, with making this game even in a limited 3D travel mode.
All you need to do is make it if ships get close to the edge of your zone, make them go to warp, then they will enter the next zone. In each zone have it setup were ships can move in total 3D movement.
No one is saying make a sim fighter game, but just make it so you can move any ship in 360 degrees and on all axis. The speed of the ships won't be anything like flying fighters, just model it after what we have seen in the movies and shows.

ship detail and design is not in question here in this poll. people using bridge commander as an example do so because it the best 3D star trek simulation game when it comes to ship to ship combat. but as far as detail and design is concerned, i would highly recommend that P.E. take a look at some of the mods now avaliable for bridge commander, as they have taken that game farther than what the original developers had intended or even thought of.

you may have to wait a few minutes, it happens sometimes on my computer but after a few minutes it completes the installation.

Navigation in it's entirety should be entirely 3D. When Picard makes orders for a heading of 180 mark 3 (for instance), what do you think that means? It is turning the ship entirely around (180 degrees) and a bit of vertical change (3 degrees up) so the ship is no longer parallel relative to it's previous heading. If STO is going to be 2D then I probably won't bother even playing this game.
