From a few posts back I really liked the USS Epimethius. Should have a sister ship named the USS Prometheus. the Afterthought and the Forethought. Gotta love Greek Myths :)

we might as well accept it and name our ships that way as I have a SLIGHT hunch that the USS will be added automatically

Yeah, somehow I feel you are right.  :)

I understand why we have been stuck with that crappy American prefix, but sometimes I wonder why Gene is his wisdom and great vision of the future, believed that ships would be labelled in accordance with ancient American ways. Maybe he just wanted to sell his show and thought Americans would love the idea of still naming starships 400 years in the future like American warships. :eyesroll:

Trek's USS stands for "United Star Ship," which more or less fits with the United Federation of Planets.  I am guessing that, because the NX-01 was designated the USS Enterprise as well, this prefix originated pre-Federation, to symbolize that a vessel was a star ship from the united planet Earth.  Even though this union expanded to include other worlds in the formation of the UFP, the 'united' part still applied.  And, of course, the 'star ship' part continues to be accurate, as well.

Yeah that was a pretty poor effort to make the prefix "USS" sound universal. :eyesroll:

In most episodes, the captain in their opening communication says, "This is Captain XXX of the Federation star ship YYY."  My point was maybe it was time to give up on the old Americanism as make with something a little more universal...

Many countries have ship prefixes, not just the Americans.  Sure, the USS part is the same, but get used to Star Trek having an American feel.  Otherwise, just look for the tiny glimmers like this.

HMS - Her(His) Majesty's Ship
HMCS - Her(His) Majesty's Canadian Ship
