I like the new Federation insignia on the uniform! Every series and practically film had a new insignia look.

Uniforms: I like the look and feel. I'm concerned with the "primed and prepped for battle" look. According to the FAQ STO takes place after the Dominion Wars. Then of course the Borg Collective are momentarily crippled from what Janeway did during the Voyager finale. And the Romulans are on good terms with the Federation. Not fearing any "wars" in the future wouldn't the Federation return back to its original mission "to seeking out new lifeforms and new civilizations?" I hope this screenshot is merely for aesthetics.

Races: All I seen is four races wearing Federation uniforms. Will we be restricted to the Federation? I'd like to explore Vulcan and Bejor.

LCARS: I like all the nerdy, geeky, nitty-gritty, BUT I'm concerned. After viewing it a few times I felt confused and overwhelmed. Not sure if I'm taking things out of context, but my gut instincts tell me this is a tad much. Tone it done the complexity. I never understood why the LCARS system always has to be so complex.

What you're seeing in the motion test is in NO WAY representative of specific functionality or information. The motion test is a collection of design elements and possible information access types for us to look at.

Actual HUDs and consoles will be much more focused, purposeful and direct.

Thanks for the comments!

Ah I had a feeling it was more of a "it looks like this" kinda thing. And it really looks nice.

If you want just give us more pictures/info and you can get more comments! :P

Heh. I should known better. I'm a web designer/developer. You don't know how many times clients nit-picked the "text" in a preview, when all I wanted was their overall impressions of the actual design. So with that... I'm going to stand back and proclaim, "I'm not worthy! I'm not worthy!" You got THE man to work on the User Interface. Works for me! And the uniforms looks kick ###; just hope "combat" won't be a way of life in STO. Me happy :)

I had the exactly oposit feeling about LCARS. It seemd like a nice intuitev and higlhy data filled system.
Well as much as a preprodiction concept art can be.
But if some find it a bit confusing it should be toned a little down. There should still be the posiblity to punch high amounts of data to who desires it.
As I said I am really relieved form what I have seen till now. Certainly it is the right direction to go.

I would just like to comment on the following item in the PE annoucement

Quote
Another thing you'll notice is the glowing coloured mech elements on all of the uniforms. These are the personal shielding elements that we're adding for STO and I'll let Glen tell you all about them. Needless to say this shielding will be upgradeable and customizable as you move through the game.

While I am not supprised with the addition of some form of 'amour' especially for the ground game. PE need to make sure that there is some drawback's to equiping it, otherwise it will turn into a must have item, that everyone has.

Anyone else have any thoughts on this?

hobei, i belive the idea they have of the picture is all got an starfleet issue shield generator as standard protection. If you mean Full plate armor ala an storm trooper, im agreeing, but that look like an borg like personal shield, who 7of9 had 20 years earlier(though it wasnt always active) , no wonder starfleet have made them. One thing to remember is, starfleet are an military organisation, and with military training, they just do many non-military tasks. But still get top notch gear, and i belive some defense are needed in an mmo, or it will be CS.

I really like the directioin Lcars is taking, looks good. The uniforms are going in the right direction for sure. If I may make a suggestion though, the pants should go over the boots. The boots look clumsy and overbearing. They almost look like their ready to go skiing or something. Tone down the boots imo. Thanks for the update PE!:p

Oh, and Avs FTW!

Bar the boots on the security which are more mech than boot...the rest of the boots look like things in my shoe collection (although my boots have thicker soles...I can't wear anything with a sole thinner than 2 inches anymore it feels wrong, you get use to these things). Even modern day military combat boots tend to be quick thick.

Although one thing you might be missing is in the designs you'll notice on the security and conn that both have glowy lights on their shoes, glowy lights mean personal shielding....Which means boots are an area things can be attatched to. So hiding an attachment area probably wont be happening.

That's fine  :logical: just so long as my character dosen't look like he takes a size 22 snowboard boot.

I would suggest they go back to full pants for the males for conn anyways, and not the tights shown, but that would look odd tucked in the boots, but a lot better outside the boots. But then again the new boots gives the uniforms a more unique look than the previous versions. Long as they don't give us long admiral dress jackets to go with it I guess.

And now.. a burst of sudden silly singing song brought to you by Mel Brooks...

We're men, we're men in tights
We roam around the forest looking for fights
We're men, We're men in tights
We rob from the rich and give to the poor, that's right
We may look like sissies
But watch what you say, or else we'll put out your lights
We're men, we're men in tights
Always on guard defending the people's rights

La, la, la, ....etc

We're men, manly men, we're men in tights Yeah!
We roam around the forest looking for fights
We're men, we're men in tights
We rob from the rich and give to the poor, that's right
We may look like pansies
But don't get us wrong, or else we'll put out your lights
We're men, we're men in tights, tight tights
Always on guard defending the people's rights
When you're in a fix, call for the men in tights
We're Butch!!

:p

I think the LCARS-interface looks allright, there are A LOT of different buttons there, but it's concept art, so no worries. The challenge for Okuda will be to create an actual interactive interface, rather than one that doesn't respond to button-clicks. Much more function over looks now, and that's a reason why I suspect this LCARS interface will look so much different than the ones before.

The reasons for the setting being 20 years post-Nemesis are very obvious. New tech can explain stuff that removes inconveniences in gameplay, the there can be a new LCARS, new political possibilities for the story, etc.

The uniforms look very good too. The possible bulkiness of the Tellarite engineer is quite appropriate. All species don't have the same physiology or appearance as humans. What I hope is that the little additional things that are purely aesthetic don't get in the way, or end up looking ridiculous.

For example, we have those little lamps on the boots of the Andorian and the Human. I can't remember how many times I've seen tons of shining lamps or flashing thingys on player models in other games. If they are as you say, addons you recieve later on through XP, rank or other means, I'd hope they would have an effect. Like, those nifty boots make you ten percent faster or something. If there is a clear meaning behind the aesthetic details, they never detract from the experience, and at best they add to it. I realise this is a nit-pick, and I'm not saying it's bad on these models, it's just a general tip to think about for the future. All, IMO, of course. :)  ;)

And that Andorian sure has a tight spandex muscle suit...! Just like in early TNG. :p

Edit: Oh, and that uniform pic is now my current wallpaper. Just thought you'd like to know.

Initial reaction to the L-CARS:  Loved them.  It seemed sufficiently complex to give a sense you were controlling a massive system, yet seemed easy to navigate.

The over all feel of it seems very much like Star Trek to me too.

Nice work.
