Multiple Servers or One Giant?

Just a question, someone brought up earlier...regarding Chat across all clusters in a single "server" (yes, I know it's not a single server) universe. I'm just curious regarding the server load acquired if 100,000 people were simultaneously launching chat in an infinite number of directions (thus forcing linkage across multiple clusters simultaneously). Would that be an issue? I'm all for a single universe, but the caution in me screams of grief potential in a rather massive fashion.

If Yahoo's pathetic existance can manage to support their chat network, then a full fledged premium hardware backed system of chat channels that're actually supported by subscription fees....  Know what I'm sayin'? :P   MMORPGs have the means and the way (Hardware and money) to do what dedicated chat communities already do with far less.   The load balancing for chat channels is incredably easy, it's only a matter of allocating proper resources thankfully.   So that's all we have to hope for, is that STO's technical department doesn't approach the chat servers like SWG did, where messages could get backed up several minutes in lag or packet loss.

'Deep Computing' is what STO is going to need.  A Supercomputer solution (Blue Gene L) is the key.

You don't have to 'buy' a BGL for $100 million to do this.  You 'rent' deep computing solutions...but there is no doubt in my mind that PE would  be able to afford to buy a Blue Gene after STO launches.

STO should leverage all of the millions of cell processor based systems that will be 'on the grid' by 07 that speak native supercomputer.

Intel chips and Intel solutions just can't do what the above can do.  Not by a long shot.

STO should be cell 'only'. ( the 'entry level' cell systems (est. under $600.00) are better than the best, most expensive systems you can by for gaming today (Alienware $3000.00+)).

There is a reason why Microsoft 'went' to the cell for X360 after seeing it and it was the reason why Sony, Toshiba and IBM designed it in the first place.

Cell processor will be on every gamers lips in 06, watch. Everything is about to change and supporting Intel for anything but business and home office solutions is absurd.  Intel has no hope to compete in the new revolution and it may take them 50 years to recover from what is about to happen starting this X-Mas.

Nobody will ever want an Intel based solution for gaming after this X-Mas.

(don't have broadband yet???) IBM just tested the power line infrastructure to deliver broadband over the power grids.

I'd like multiple universes/servers/clusters/whatever if they could have one set in the next generation time frame, one for the original series, and the mirror universe where we'd all have facial hair.

Its technicaly possible to host everyone at the same server. If you have the infrastructure to support it. An example of that is EvE online wich is a single servercluster game. Although eve has a small amount of simult players compared to WoW and other multi shard games its still possible to do the same with larger amounts of simult online players if you have good networking code to avoid bottlenecks and good infrastructure.

snip

Here we go again :eyesroll:

No MMOG company will limit their software to a single set of hardware like cells.

also are you an IBM fanboy? they are testing broadband through powerlines? we have had that for aprox 6 years over here. IBM are n00bs. :eyesroll:

Rotflmao hahaha :D   Between alternate universes it would seem as though the only variations that existance could come up with were Rogain and shaving products :P

Nevermind, just saw in the faq where it makes what I said moot.
