Multiple Servers or One Giant?

I was wondering how the servers thing would work out. Is PE going to have one giant server or many servers. Many servers would pose the problem that you might not be able to interact with the same people, therefore creating complications with Guilds/Clans/Fleets/etc. Perhaps it could be like in World of Warcraft (WoW) in which every server is an entirely new game, you cannot (usually) transfer characters between the worlds. It was a system that I hated in WoW, because it didn't make sense, but I believe it would be more appropriate here.

Now that is something that it will almost definitely be too early to tell.

Its just something I've been wondering about, and it is a relatively serious issue.

And I don't think its really that early to tell. I mean, look at some of the other discussions and compare this to that one. Its a pretty early problem and I think an answer should be figured out soon, if one hasn't already.

I'm hoping for different servers with different rules and different events going on in them

Server structure is very dependent on demand and game design.  Not to mention the fact that I think they are still hiring for the engineering director position.

I am sure that some of the other people here could provide a more detailed and factual post on this.

I'm in favor of a single server.  I always have been.

Agreed, ST:O wouldn't feel the same if you had to choose a server to play on. And if they're permanent, it can make complications for friends.

While I agree that a single server would be awesome, that will never happen.

Simply put, your home internet connection can't handle 500,000 people on one server.  State of the art computers can't handle 20,000 per server from WoW, I don't see how anyone would think that a single server would be able to handle 100,000-350,000 people on a game at any one time.

I could have swore I heard my modem crying at the sheer thought of that type of work...

Your lack of logic and computer knowledge amuses the Simpleton.

I find myself having to agree with Kinneas ( I didn't mean to, it just happened.) Maybe your 28.8 bps dialup cant handle the intensity, but my 6mbps down / 4mbps up can. It's not as if the game is going to be one server per Galaxy (See a concept called load balancing and the idea of having different zones on different server). The game is not going to be played in a tight area where everyone is always in range of each other. We are going to be in outer space, it is pretty huge, and I'm sure we will be pretty spread out. This is leaving out all those instanced ships, static planets, and instanced mission zones.  So, i'm going to guess that in my viewing range, i'm going to have about 100 people at a time as an extreme maximum, Now, if you hook enough lines up to a network, and you get enough servers (Regular servers, no, there is no need for blue gene, all that will do is raise the subscription cost up the wazoo) working together to host the zones, giving priority to the higher used zones (Can be tweaked after the game goes live for a bit) It will be very easy to have 500k people or whatever on a server. It is very scalable. Now, again I'll say that if your using dialup, I'm sorry, but I just don't care if you lag. It's time to spring for cable, dialup is pretty much like using a telegraph when a phone is available, and no self respecting gamer would be caught using it to game(Except under extreme circumstances.)

Bottom line, yes it can be handled on one server. No, no blue gene, it is not needed at all, ever, ever.... ever. Yes, a modern home internet connection can handle it, and by the time the game is released in 2007 fiber will be out to a lot of places if not the new enhanced DOSCIS 3.0 which will also increase our speeds.

Simpleton's post summed up:

If you can't see it, there is no need for the server transfer it to your comp.  The only stuff the server needs to transfer is the stuff you see, and then pre-load the areas you are likely to see soon.

I just don't see one massive server working for any mmo's today. There are to many subscribers out there for one server to handle. Honestly think about the hardware issues it would take to have a central computer core handle 250,000 simultaneous connections at one time. Technology is not there yet to handle this. If you play WoW and think there is lag going to say Ironforge or Orgrimmar then think about adding a major increase in the hardware/software demand to the system by going to a 1-server platform. Though it would be great to have a one world playing field it just is not practical in todays playing field.

Another issue brought up was server transfers. Different publishers seem to have different ideas on how this should be handled. In WoW, as most of you already know, they evaluate the demands on the servers and open up server transfer from a high load to a low load transfer for a short amount of time. In SWG they allow transfers from any server to any server. So this really will be up to the developers/publishers to decide what they will do if anything in the matter of server transfers.

I for one look forward to having multiple servers with multiple characters. In most of the mmos I have played that is something I have used simply because I like experiencing how the game is different from one server to the next.
