I say, why not start marking player artwork about themes and ideas you would like to see in STO. Even if you have drawings of ships, bases and planets. Why not link stuff here, so we all can see how well you guys can draw. Maybe PE will post the good ones on their new website once it's ready.

It's just a thought guys, what do you think?

Did someone say Artwork?

I'm the Art Director for STO so I thought I'd drop by and check out the forum. Happy to be here...

I'd love to see some artwork by fans, there is already a tonne of great work out there and it's all very inspiring and informative.

If I could jump in, what I'm interested in hearing is what DON'T you want to see... what direction (as an example: an Anime take on Star Trek) would you hate to see?

We're in the process of defining our look and, while we have a pretty good idea where we're going, it can't hurt to hear some thoughts from these forums.

cheers...

Ken

Well... my Producer told me to sign in with this Username and. like any good production artist, I listen to my Producer.

I'm sure either Mitch or Glen can confim my identity...

Welcome to the boards Ken, you'll have to forgive our weariness in your introducing yourself, it wouldn't be the first time someone has tried to emulate a Perpetual Staffer...

A pleasure to meet you!

Can we get a link to your bio???
-----
Are they/you using MAYA?  Are the tools equal or more powerful than Maya?

What did you think of the video demos of the PS3 and the cell processors 'emotion engine'?

Have you seen the 'Killzone' video.   Sony is promising that the Killzone demo is 'in game' footage and that the game will play like that.

Have you seen the Unreal 2007 demo or the 'Fight Night' video?   The programmable shaders and skin models are amazing.

Will we see you folks leverage the visual power of the cell processor?

Will it blow away everything we saw at E3 this go round?

Mitch has always proclaimed that they didn't have the workstations to do it with.  Well how did all the other developers get the tools to put together thier demos?  So the tools are out there, no?

Thanks for the welcome everyone.

Hrmmm... now on to the questions.

My bio:

My resume and portfolio

"Are they/you using MAYA?  Are the tools equal or more powerful than Maya?":

More than likely we'll be using Maya (as well as a number of other tools) but our pipeline is just starting to develop so we're in (and will be for a while) a testing phase.

"What did you think of the video demos of the PS3 and the cell processors 'emotion engine'?":

Looks good, but all Next Gen boxes look good... it's a given.

"Have you seen the 'Killzone' video.   Sony is promising that the Killzone demo is 'in game' footage and that the game will play like that.":

THAT would be incredible.. is the game releasing in 8 years?

:p

If they can pull it off the bar will be raised for sure... fun!

"Have you seen the Unreal 2007 demo or the 'Fight Night' video?   The programmable shaders and skin models are amazing.":

The Unreal tech is amazing on a lot of levels. We'll definitely be looking into it.

"Will we see you folks leverage the visual power of the cell processor?":

We'll try and squeeze as much out of any box we can, when it makes sense for our approach. We'll see what we can do once our pipe is up and running. The reality is we're Next Gen, we have to look the part - however that manifests itself.

"Will it blow away everything we saw at E3 this go round?":

I would hope so, the stuff you saw this year will be a few years old by the time we launch. We better at least equal the visuals seen this year.

Again... our stylistic approach and choices will dictate / lead our usage of shaders, lighting, textures etc. Our look development process will determine our usage of existing, new and proprietary tech.

Thanks for the thoughts...

Ken

Hi Ken, so are you the Art Director or a production artist? There is a difference.

No offense, but I'd like to see and acknowledgement from Mitch on your role on the team.

Some absolutely stunning work in your Resume, Ken :) Are you confident you can bring the diversity of the Star Trek universe to life in STO? One envious job you have, eitherway ;)

Well you guys heard Ken, get to work on what he is looking for hehe. I will see what I can do too, I am not the good, but can't hurt to try.

As far as what I would hate to see Ken, no cartoon like worlds please, I got my fill of it in WoW.

I would like to see things like or better than what is on dark and light.

Follow the link.

just saying the level of artwork shouldn't be a cartoon, if you make it very detailed, I will love it. hehe

Hi Ken,

Welcome to the STO project.  I've seen some of your work and I think it's fantastic.

Regarding graphical style for STO.  My preference would be for realism as opposed to Japanimation style(WoW), fantasy (GW), or Comic Book (Elite Force 2).
