What do you think of underground cities? Would you live in one and are they a plausable next step?

I think I would rather live in a underground city over a underwater city. It seems plausible though. We can already mine stuff pretty deep with wood supports so I think we could do better if we tried.

Because we will have no choice but to move underground as the surface of the Earth will be uninhabitable by 2100 most likely. And, I think it's a great idea, just as long as we don't turn into mutants like the one's from H.G. Wells "Time Machine!"

that all depends on what kind of environment we create for ourselves underground. if we recreate the entire biosphere of the surface or at least a miniaturized version of it underground, then that won't happen. if we do cut ourselves off from the surface completely this would be necessary in order to cultivate the plants and animals we currently enjoy. depending on surface conditions, we may or may not be able to use the surface to harvest food. if it is uninhabitable i would assume that this option is not possible. if the sky is clear then we could convert the entire surface into a giant array of photovoltaic power generators.

the problem with an underwater city is where do you get power from? there is OTEC but the platforms would be too spread out to cater to a large underwater city. then most of the power generated would be used to create fresh water. an underground city can use geothermal energy (highly inefficient, or solar arrays). they would get fresh water from underwater springs and aquifers.

the colonies in Gundam are huge, and even have an artificial atmosphere with clouds and everything. it has all the comforts of the outdoors except you can see the ground on the other side. if you watch the new BSG:"Colonial Day" where they is a simulated environment... instead of sticking engines on it, dig a hole in the ground and drop it in. or sink it below the surface of the ocean.
