Crazed Role Players

Too many times on forums like these do I come across people who really believe that they are in Starfleet and talk about how they are a Lt. Cmdr on so and so sim and I see them act in character if their 'Commanding Officer' is posting in the same thread.

Are you this immersed in Role Playing?

I think it's just silly, I was on another board about this game and there was a thread there with about 4 different role players from one site all talking between each other as if they really were stationed on a starship and they had actual careers in Starfleet, even in off topic threads it goes on!

It irks me anyway, that people just don't know how to seperate some play by board sim on the internet where they are captain of the USS OMFG!!!!11LOLOL from the real truth that they are just some 19 year old loner sat behind a computer screen.

Role Playing is great fun and I have participated in a couple of good sims, but its confined to the game area and that's it. Are we going to see the official boards amongst others flooded with these crazed Role Players once STO goes live? God, I hope not.

hehehe i know the people you're talking about, i've come across a few in my days of simming. My personal favourites are the ones who think they deserve actual OOC respect because they sim a high ranking character. ooooh they #### me.

The very worst kind indeed, those who maintain a hierarchy when supposedly 'Out Of Character'. Sad thing is alot of people for some crazy reason put up with it because they think it's important to gain rank in a text based sim so people will in turn go on to respect them. Power crazy people really, I didn't need to proclaim myself a Captain and start a crappy sim to get respect, I just neede dto contribute to a story and write a thoroughlly good post to get the resepct of my fellow writers, not crazed role players who just want to ascend a rank to make themselves feel more powerful.

Yeah I have to side with the old colonel on this one.  It is wierd to read a post on forms that is written in character.  Especially considering in terms of STO the game is not even out.  I think that there are a few who take the RP thing a bit too far.  I don't need to see ...Incomming transmittion... and all that other fluf.  This is game design form for a game that is in the early stages of development.  I think that there are folks who start to believe they are these characters they play and that is obsession.  You need to be able to seperate game from reality.

I think players who do the "INCOMING HAIL... " thing are just having some fun. I'll admit I've done it a few times, but that's to just bring some fun into it. I dont immerse myself into it and take it too seriously. But I hear you when it comes to some people out there who act out the part constantly. It can be quite annoying.

While it can be annoying, does anyone here play D&D or like Tolkein? I sometimes greet my friends in Elvish...wait...that makes me a nerd, doesn't it?

Not as bad as expecting your friends to address you by your in game rank and then kicking off if they dare address you as the normal person that you are, I've seen people go way to far with StarTrek roleplaying, far far sadder than addressing someone in Elivish :p Which isn't so bad, I sometimes say Klingon greetings, I'm talking about someone not even role playing at that moment acting as if they have a real distinguished career in Starfleet, trust me we're gonna see volumes of them, already seeing it now.

I didn't call all role players loners, I said the ones who act as if they really are a Starfleet officer and expect people to treat them as such when they are OOC are sad loners, which is very true, I assure you.

Captain's Log: Star date 413234.2

I was posting on a Earth messageboard from my LCARS screen and noticed an odd thread. I clicked at warp 9 and found that some fool didn't beleive I could truely be captain of the USS Gravytrain.

I have suggested we got to yellow alert until this thread blows over.

What really really gets me about Star Trek roleplayers is half of them are idiots with no grasp of Star Trek.

My girlfriend likes to roleplay as do many of her friends and I tend to watch from time to time as really, they (the aforementioned ididots) annoy me and I couldnt bear to role play with them.

Im less worried about obsessive roleplayers who have no life beyond the computer screen and infact cannot grasp the concept and more worried about the amount of Drama queens we are going to have to put up with because we corrected them, its not a thingydobobby its a Tricorder and no it wont slay the alien ship attacking us.

Im not saying ban non Star Trek fans, Im just hoping they will try learn the game before throwing a hissy fit that we arent roleplaying.

To curtail my ramblings I will come back to the point. In CoH I recently passed by a roleplaying Supergroup. Not a one of them would acknowledge that I said hello (Id stop to offer them buffs and realised they were rp'ers). You will probably find that the nuts who insist on roleplay will get a ship, fill it with likeminded looneys and go park in a corner of the galaxy and leave us all alone. I hope.
