Awesome. Just a classic thread.

I started watching around 1970 when I was about 6 y/o. It was one of the few t.v. shows my mom would let me watch. She didn't care for it, but thought it told good morality tales. And it did.

Of course, as a small boy; it was all about the adventure and the fantastic setting. Fast forward a few years and it's about Spock's difficulties being an outsider and admiration for/desire to emulate a charismatic leader.

By the time I was a teenager it was about the social conflict, civics, the Socratic state/individual balance (Let that be your Last Battlefield, The Omega Glory, -I learned the preamble to the Constitution watching Shatner's outstanding performance there- Court Martial, learning the downside of hero worship: Obsession) and so on.

TOS is one of those quality works of commercial art that continues to speak to me through the years. I rewatched 'The Deadly Years' while my father was battling Alzheimers and it spoke so loudly it was nearly a scream.

Life is a marathon with many twists, turns, detours, rises, and falls. And I still, decades later, find TOS has much to say that I'm only now becoming capable of truly understanding. It's been out in front of me from the starting line. And I'll probably find it's still got something new to show me when I reach the finish line.

Now that's ART. And I feel sorrow for those that don't see it.

:(

Well said!

I always like it when LTS visits. Her original ost on this thread is awesome. I love hearing about folks 'discovering' Star Trek, it makes my little trekkie heart go pitty-pat  :D

So many reasons.

First and foremost, the series was adult. Growing up (in the 1990s), I was so sick of all of these series about teenagers, high school, etc. Even those series that didn't deal with such matters had actors that were so young, or made to look young. One thing I adore about Trek is that it is not only intelligent, but that it had REAL grown-ups. We place far too much emphasis on youth in this culture. High school sucked--why would I want to relive it in every #### sitcom and drama I watch?

Another reason was the stories. Yes, some of them were incredibly cheesy and just plain bad. However, most of them dealt with issues dear to my heart--acceptance, peace, love, equality--but most important of all HOPE. Star Trek gives hope that the world will indeed be a better place in the future. We will get past the wars and the rough times, and that there is a vast universe that is full of problems, solutions, new cultures (cool for an archaeologist like me) and unusual phenomena. While the universe is not portrayed as perfect by any stretch, Trek gives us hope that it will get better--and it'll be one hell of a ride!

Also Leonard Nimoy. But my love for him goes beyond Trek--I'd watch him read the phone book.
