Ok all of you Trekkers out there, lets see if you can name the the current positions of a new Starfleet ship.

After all this is how it will be laided out once STO goes live.

So see if you can name them, and also give it's function.

Umm, okay, without (recently) looking at the FAQ, and assuming some optional bridge positions and throwing in some of my own assumptions.

Captain - Its his (or her) ship, Captain gives the orders (both verbally, and through an interface) that everyone follows.

XO - Captains Number 1, the expendable (sort of) extension of the Captains authority. The authority that gets sent to the front, while the Captain stays on the bridge.

Tatical/Ops - Phasers, Torpedoes, and Marines. Responsible for the offensive and defensive combat capabilities of the ship.

Helm - Driver, Its the Helmsman's job to keep the ship on course, and away from unfriendly objects, like planets.

Engineer - Fixes the damage to the ship that everyone elses screw-ups cause. Also the person that tweaks your equipment to perform about 250% above and beyond what its normally supposed to.

Medical - Fixes the damage to you that your screw-ups cause. Also the person that keeps you free from diseases (cures your common cold), and gives you a supply of the oh-so-good painkillers. Additionally, good for opera singing.

Science - The only person on the bridge who actually understands the science behind of what keeps this starship going. (the engineers might know some, but the science people specialize in knowing). This officer can operate sensors so well, you can see whats coming tomorrow. These guys work in information.

Out of remote curiosity, whats the difference between a Trekker, and a Trekkie? I see the two terms, and I wonder.

Good question. Not even sure half of us people know what it means when we call ourselves it.

From what I was meant to understand:
Us Trekkers are the TNG+ era folk. We can't stand being called a Trekkie. Sounds silly but that's what we've always heard.

Trekkies are the originals who have been around since TOS and the first few original movies. Generalized, and now seems to be the word of useage for anyone just 'partially' interested these days.

Now if anyone has some sort of 'offical' definition, please share it. I'd love to know for certain.

Oh and Tactical and Ops are two different positions in 24th century ships.  :p

I'd add that I see the XO as the person with the overveiw of whats going on around the ship internally, the captain would be more concerned with whats happening externally. So, the XO would see that there is damage sustained somewhere, he/she then decides what should be done about it, this decision is then passed over to the engineers who sort out how to do it and who should do it. Basically the command needs to be split down the middle, all the captain needs to focus on is what the ship is doing, its the XO's job to actually have everything available for the captain to be able to make his decisions. Afterall, the captain doesn't need to get involved in all the nitty gritty detail like rotas and the like, thats the XO's job.

Ok the Medical guy and Engineer really don't stay on the bridge a lot, so they don't have stations there. But the Engineer can transfer control to a station on the bridge if they need too.

And what about the Helms positions? There are two right, are both equal, or do they both handle different things when flying the ship.

And lets not forget the Counselor position. Not sure if there will be a need for a player in this spot, maybe it will be an NPC.

I think having a counsellor on the Bridge was just an insane chronoism of the 1980's- we never saw that on any other vessel did we? Hopefully they won't have the same prominence in STO(that is sitting besides the CO and XO, I think Deanna was an exception)

As for Helm, as far as I know there is only one, the other station deals with different science/ops related things such as scans and shields.

Well as far as the Counselor goes, I do remember Capt. Pricard tell Troy, He had a replace coming in a few days.

This was after she got married to Now Capt. Riker, and they both are now on the USS Titan.
