Well from the FAQ, we know that large ships can hold hundreds of players.

Knowing this, what problems do you see, if any, that might pop up with crew sizes this large?

The biggest single problem I see is unit cohesion.  That many people will often have widely varying ideas as to how to proceed.  I sincerely hope that such large sized crews wil be able to work together harmoniously :)

I imagine that different sections, for the sake of cohesion, will be independant of each other, though able to act? I've no idea at this stage how it would work, but then it is 5am :eyesroll:

I see your point, ColonelGraff (Love the Ender series BTW - if thats where you got the name from!;)  The real salient point here is that, on any ship, there can be only one captain.  He or she makes decesions that effect the entire crew.  If you have a good sized sciences core that needs to study astronomical phenomenon to gain experience, but the captain is running at warp 9 to catch some pirates to make XP for the bridge crew , there WILL be conflicts of interest.

Perhaps experience will be shared by the crew regardless of size or discipline?  not sure, all I have is speculation :)

I hope that there will be different focuses for a crew. I'm not much interested in playing if the focus of the entire game is to hunt down pirates, smugglers, and terrorists and to just kill the same things over and over again in a mindless grind to make Captain or Commander.

I hope instead that a crew can have a particular focus so that those people who are interested in sniffing out galactic smugglers can do so and those crews who are interested in charting Nebulae and unknown regions can also do so and still advance at the same pace as those hunt down intergalactic law breakers.

In military settings, you are trained to follow orders. So on Star Trek they don't have much of a problem following orders because the crew is trained to do so. I honestly don't think you can get 100+ together who will work together. There is a really good chance you will have 5 to 8 people in that group of 100+ that think they know more than everyone else trying to take command or at least control the direction of game play.

I cannot tell you how many times i've been in small groups in other MMOGS that just haven't worked because 2 people thought they knew best what to do, so instead of following, they both would just argue until they were blue in the face and we accomplished nothing. I don't want to even think about what kind of nightmare it would be to join a crew on a larger sized vessle.

To circumvent this problem, we might see something where a bridge crew of 5 or 8 was in total control of the mission and the rest of us might just be along for the ride in order to complete a mission to upgrade a skill or weapon or something. In such a case its much more likely to find a captain who will rotate mission types so that all departments get a shot at something decent instead of praying for a group of 100 people who realize the benefit of chain of command and working with everyone.

I doubt that the entire crew would be online at the same time.  There are probably going to be hundreds on the ship's roster, but they won't all be working together at the same time on a mission.

I imagine it more as a mini-city.  You might look for some other people to go on an away mission, and there could be dozens of other away missions going on at the same time.  Each department would probably have things to do, too.

Shuttles, transporter (oops ) & holodeck.
Plus a little suspension of disbelief.

A moving city is a very accurate way to think about it, with missions availabe all around the ship and multiple ways to get off.

I wonder if the Dautless Class with ever become available. I know that it wasn't a real federation class ship. But I would like it if it was available.

yeah but there is only so many shuttles you can have

online city :D cool, just cant wait for at least two ships fighting against another ship, we could see the spare helmman and a spare security guy to get in the shuttles and provide cover :) but i think that they would a bit useless against a cube  :bored:

picute it, a borg cube the only thing left in its way is a few shuttles from earth then it is time to say good bye to everyone we know in ST

This was the big piece of news that made me happy. This was my ideal vision, but then I thought about all the complications and how you would keep everyone entertained and in line and such. So then I just got rid of it. If Perpetual is implementing this, I know that it will work at least moderately well. So that makes me very happy.
