Hey guys, I hope I'm allowd to post this on a Trek board.  I usually read here and don't post so you probably don't recognize the name.  Anyway, does anyone know about trig identities or logarithms?  I have a final tomorrow and can't figure out 3 practice problems.  If anyone thinks they could help post back or contact me on MSN at daenigma87@msn.com

Post the problems...we'll be glad to help. You shouldn't post an e-mail address (bad idea). ;)

This is as far as we got in Ten Forward.
This was posted to us a couple of nights ago.

[(sec - 1) / (sec + 1)] + [(cos - 1) / (cos + 1)]

(sec/sin) - (sin/cos)

(sec x sec) / (csc x csc)

(sec/sin) - (sin/cos)

.848125 = 1.001125 (to the power of) 25 t

Soh Cah Toa
Sin  Cos  Tan

Cho Sha Cao
(these I can't remember, they are cosecant, cotangent and secant)
Therefore
Cho        Sha      Cao
Cosecant Secant Cotangent (I think?!

Sin = 1/sec
Cos = 1/csc
Tan = 1/Cot

What is t?

actually csc = 1/sin and sec = 1/cos

For the log question

If x = b (to the power of y)
 y = log   x
           b

Therefore

t = log           .848125
      1.001125

convert the left side to cosine:

[(1 / cos - 1)/ (1 / cos + 1)]

using cos as the common denominator:

[ (1 - cos ) / cos] / [ (1 + cos) / cos]

the cos in the denominator cancels out so we have
(1 - cos) / ( 1 + cos)

adding to the second part we have
(1 - cos) / ( 1 + cos) + (cos -1) / (cos + 1)

we now have a common denominator so it becomes

( 1 - cos + cos - 1 ) / (cos + 1)

the numerator adds to 0 so the final answer: 0

Quote (LadyZo @ Jan. 22 2005, 11:34 am)
(sec/sin) - (sin/cos)

convert left numerator side to cos

( 1 / cos / sin )

1 / (cos . sin )

common denominator is cos . sin

( 1 - sin ^ 2) / (cos . sin )

cos ^ 2 / (cos . sin)

cos / sin

= cot

I don't understand the 3rd problem. Does sec x sec read as secant of x secant or secant of x timex sec (of what?)

The 4th is the same as the 2nd.
