There is an easy solution. Make a server for the cry babies who dont want to lose their ships. And make another for the hardcore gamers who dont care about their ships being destroyed in a fight. I'm sick of most of the people complaining that ships shouldnt be able to be destroyed. I wouldnt care if my ship was destroyed and i wouldnt complain about it like some immature little kid.

OMG... no permadeath?  No perma-ship-death?  People, WHO CARES if something you "worked on" or customized for a year gets destroyed, this is a video game!  I'm sorry, but this thread has just turned me OFF of this game.  This sickens me.  Woohoo, I want a video game with no real risk involved, oh yeah.  :P

LACK OF PERMADEATH = LAME
LACK OF SHIP DESTRUCTION = THE MAKINGS OF A GAME NOBODY WOULD PLAY

Hey, how many people here, if faced with a totally disabled ship but no possibility for permadeath, would prefer to just sign up for a new character and start fresh?  ME.

Hey, how many people here want a video game where not only are ALL the players on your team, but the AI cannot possibly do the kind of damage to you that you can do to them?  NOT ME.

Sorry to be such a ranter, but g is this a bad idea.  If you want to work on and customize something for a year that's that important to you, do it in REAL FRIGGIN LIFE!!

you are going against yourself, like you said, it's a videogame, not real life. and besides, you can't start over in real life (as far as we know)... but yes, i agree that there should be ship death to certain levels, once you have attained the rank of something, or you have reached a certaiin lvl, or in some areas of space... etc etc...

(Captain's Log - Supplemental. Our vessel has been disabled by a trio of Warbirds while attempting to defend our colony near the nuetral zone. Our warp engines, shields, weapons, transporters, warp core, replicators, artificial gravity, hull plating, EPS grid, turbolifts, life support and theme song have been disabled, but apparently duct tape is still holding. Everyone on the colony is alive, and the facilities still stand, despite burning high for three hours since the attack, but apparently nobody cares about it anymore because the Romulans stole all our Cool Stuff. We have begun repairs on the impulse drive so we can limp back to Federation space, which would be a seven month journey - but the Warbirds patrolling nearby will probably blow the engines sky high again as soon as we start moving.)

The Captain finishes recording and turns to the First Officer. "Why haven't you joined the others in Engineering?"

First Officer replies back: "Same reason you haven't, it's stupid. Do we really have to sit here like target practice trying to impulse this thing back to Starbase?"

The Captain looks around and thinks it over. "No. The nearest hull breach is on deck eight, section twelve. We could go there and jump out into space without EV suits." He checks his chair console. "There's an access terminal still working in that section, we can disable the structural integrity fields once we get there."

First Officer thinks about it a second. "Well. Will we lose rank? What will become of us?"

Captain shrugs. "I kind of liked being on the science station, I wouldn't mind starting a new character either way."

First Officer nods. "I've been working a long time to make Captain, but I think I've got the game down a lot better than I did before. I'm sure I'll make command again soon."

The Captain smiles. He kicks a fallen boom mike out of the way.

First Officer casts his eyes at the empty chairs at Conn, Nav, Tactical, and Science - those officers are all down on deck eleven fixing the ship, such as it was. "I guess this means Commander Suckafool is now the captain of the USS Lemonprise."

The Captain and First Officer walk toward the turbolift, which does not open. They sigh, and the Captain jerks a modular panel off the wall, exposing Jeffries Tube Deck 1 Alpha, according to the beautiful sticker which they both stare at in gorgeous 1600x1200x32bit glory. "He can have this piece of crap. After you..."

lol that was funny!

Like I said I think the ship should explode and you should spawn to the nearest space port.  I don't think they'll make a game where your ship explodes and you die and have to make another character.  If they do that I highly doubt they'd get many players to stay for to long.  After dying 3-4 times and having to make a new character, people would get bored and move on to another game.  You and a hand full of people would stay and think its cool.  Why do you think in regular video games they have save points, or you can save your game.  Can you see in HL2 you can't get past the 3rd chapter without dying, what would most people do?  They would find a cheat for the game.

Like Daemonhunter said you can't start over in real life.  Once your dead your dead a game that was that realistic would not make.  They might as well have it so when you die the DVD self destructs, the game is erased from your computer and you can't play the game ever again.

well put it this way, other factions aren't playable. So its NPC enemies at this point. The computer won't grief. Also chances are that there will be other ships will be coming to your aid. To tow you back.

As for say when expansion comes out and players have the allowance to grief. Simply the people who can't live with grief or can't get help. Won't go near battles.

Prepetual also understands all the griefing and stuff. They will figure out how to stop griefers.

Just want to post a comment to the extent that I have calmed down in my rant now.  However, I do find it to be a bit babying, this over-defensiveness.  I mean, if the AI were to usually be /satisfied/ with disabling a ship in most circumstances (perhaps the difference of being guilty of an act of aggression and guilty of an act of war is enough to warrant restraint from government-aligned officers) that would be sensible and helpful to prevent frequent dying.  But if there was a real risk of destruction, it would add to the tactical flavor; reinforcements and shield/warp engine status would be primary factors in deciding how long to stick it out in a critical engagement.
